BULLITT movie - Question

#1

Post by Simona »

Hi to all car fans,
I have following question please:

What is it - second car - black car in the movie? Have someone infos please? + some technical data?
And next question, what I have, for interest, how many usd cost this Steve McQueen Mustang at 1968??
BTW. Mustang have really brutal/devil sound of engine and exhausts... it´s real sound or it´s movie trick?

I found few photos on the internet:

I have the DVD ;)
from Wickipedia:
"The scene had Bullitt in a dark "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback, chasing two hit-men in a "Tuxedo Black" 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. (In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT "Bullitt Mustang," which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note. A new "Bullitt Mustang" is being produced for the 2008 model year.)"

I have no clue about cost

naah, not really Shike.... but I do like the car chase scene quite a bit...
Great pix of the car Simona :)
Another of my favorite car chase scenes was in Diamonds are Forever with the red '71 Mustang through Las Vegas (right zenheretic?)

I read they used a race car for the exhaust sound of the Bullitt Mustang in the movie.

Simona I almost forgot, the price for that car in 1968 might be hard to find but if I can recall correctly, I would say about 3 to 4,000.00 $ USD. Right at the showroom. A 1969 Toyota was @ $1,200.00 brand new ;)

No, they didn't have that sound. Back then (well...... even now  ) they used to put that sound in any car chase scene :D even a 1969 Toyota sounded like a Formula 1 car :D :D . The gear shifting was close but the tail pipe sound was much deeper. The Best roar was on GM cars IMO, Pontiac GTO's and Firebirds, Chevy Camaros and specially Buicks. I had one. A 1972 Buick Skylark with dual Weber carbs, a 350.2 engine , glasspack muffler, etc. And a MachI feeling when you hit the gas pedal  :D
Ahhhhh the good ole days!

Thanks for the vid link Simona, that is one awesome car chase. Gotta love the old movies, when there was no CGI.

They say that the 440 (7.2 liter for those not in the US) in the Charger would have easily outrun the 390 (6.4 liter) in the 'stang, but I'm sure that the Charger lost a lot of ground in the corners. Have you ever tried to manuever a large car around corners while sliding? It's not easy. I also heard that the steering on the charger was so vague that the stunt driver completely missed the mark he was supposed to hit in the last crash.

Have you watched any other good car chase movies? I have a couple :D

If you like great engine sounds, check out Speed channel for the "Victory by Design" series. It plays every now and again, each episode covering a particular manufacturer. They've got Corvette, Lotus, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Maserati and a Ford/Shelby one. I think they're available on DVD as well. Total car porn. :D

I'm not so sure it would have. The 440 Magnum had an advantage in horsepower, but the Charger weighed about half a ton more than the Mustang. The extra weight makes a big difference. The Mustang would beat it to top end...for the Mustang. On an open, straight road though, the R/T would be waving bye-bye in his rear view mirror. (Voice of experience here ;) )

Flashback to my first hot rod. Have you ever heard the sound of a 409 Chevy sucking air through all eight barrels of a dual-quad setup? :D
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

No, I am ashamed. That would be a beautiful sound... but sadly, I was born too late for all the large over-powered cars of yore.

And I'm fairly familiar with the power vs weight problem as well, my old 86 mustang GT wouldn't beat my friends 71 pontiac lemans for very long after the stoplight, but then again, it had 100 cubic inches on me :D My 96 crown vic PI has no chance :o

As for other good car movies, there's also the origional Gone In 60 Seconds (40 min car chase destroying 93 cars, featuring a 73 mustang), Vanishing Point (the original, basically a long commercial for the 71 challenger), and one of my personal favorites: Gumball Rally (cross country race, with one of the competitors in a 66 shelby cobra)

The Roadrunner was Plymouth's version of the Charger, both shared a lot of parts, but some of the sheet metal was different. Grilles and tail lights probably were too.

IIRC, the baseline 6 cylinder Mustang would have sold for right around $2,000 at that time, the 8 cylinder, fully equipped, fastback might have been a bit under $3,000. Convertibles, then as now, would have cost more.

I dig "Bullitt" big time. McQueen at his peak, and Jackie Bisset when she was young and dewy. Frankly, though, I find "The Getaway" a better film overall.

Another aspect of "Bullitt" that I enjoy is the weapons; specifically, McQueen's Colt Diamondback snubby and the bad guy's Winchester take-down pump.

The only car I ever drove over 100mph was a '68 Charger. "Join the Dodge revolution!" That was their ad campaign in the mid-sixties.

I saw "Bullitt" in the theater the week it opened. Now I really feel old. But my heart is young.

Yeah, for another good car chase, watch "The Rock" with Sean Connery & Nicolas Cage. It has a Ferrari vs. Humvee chase. Not the newer "grocery getter" H2 Humvee but the original, H1 military-style Humvee. The newer ones are nothing but a Tahoe chassis with an H2 body on it.
