Impressed by Ultra Fine rods

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

I've always been perfectly happy with the level of sharpness I could achieve with the regular rods that come with the Sharpmaker. A while ago, I ordered a pair of ultra fine rods to try them out and see what the excitement is all about. Today came the time to actually use them, as my Stretch II and Viele had become dull enough to warrant a sharpening session. What can I say, wow! I didn't expect to notice much improvement over the regular fine rods, but I was wrong. The UF rods really give the edge an extra boost, both the ZDP and the VG-10 got noticeably sharper after finishing up with the UF rods.

Anyone else like their UF rods?

I couldn't agree more. The ultra's are my main goto rods. I have yet to use the diamond ones.

Wouter,

I made the same experience. For long years I haven't known what I miss; meanwhile I use for 90 % the ultra fine rods only for keeping the edge sharp.

:spyder: The UF are great, but ya gotta keep yer contact very light or the edge can roll at that level of fine sharpness. :spyder:

Nice Post Mr. Blonde. I was wondering about using these on my ZDP bladed knives. Thanks.

Just now, as I was working with these UF rods on my Stretch II some more, I made a cut through my regular testing medium (fine print newspaper) and I hardly felt any resistance of the paper! I've been using this paper for a long time, so I know when I made something sharper than usual. I just told myself 'ok, sharp enough' and quickly packed everything away. The edge geometry of the Stretch II is probably a big contributor to the performance, but it's been a while since I was slightly scared of an edge. :D
