Looking at the recent thread on the Lava, and the variations of it, who here would be interested in a "Maxi Lava" (props to Datan for the name and idea)?
Real Lava stats:
Blade length: 48 mm
Edge: 40 mm
Total Length: 135 mm
Blade: VG-10
Maxi Lava
Blade length: 58 mm
Edge: 50 mm
Total Length: 158 mm
Blade: Balsa wood :P
Please Chad and Sal? :D

Great first draft mate Let's see if us Aussie upstarts from Downunder cannot get some gee-up here to support this little project I've had in my head for a while now. Once again, I have to say how much I love the design and concept of this blade.
A slightly larger than current production Lava... the "Maxi Lava" :p would be friendlier for those with slightly larger mitts, and for those who love a bit more steel for compliance work
The extra little bit of cutting edge would make it a better proposition for everyday usage too.
Finish this baby off with micarta wholly for a lightweight blade. Or with S/S bolsters similar to that pictured with the mini Persian and you'll have a calssy but very capable MA/ MBS blade.
Let's hear it for the Lava !!! hip hip hooray !, and let's hear from the masses.... what say you guys, and gals.

I am not familiar with Balsa wood and my concern that probably it will be little soft on Rc scale.
But I will buy :spyder: with FFG leaf shape blade and wood handle. Maxi Lava or Mini

As others have said above, I would like to see the Lava with a Spyderedge. What would you all think about etched handles like the Cricket / Spin / D-fly? Yeah! A Serrated Lava etched! I want one.
Yeah, speaking of other CLB designs... I'm thinking of making my next knife purchase a Boker Subclaw... any comments on that particular knife, guys? :spyder:

I thought about it some more, this thing would weigh a ton if it was done in stainless, etched or otherwise. I would like to see it get the Dodo treatment with G-10 sides, color please, and while we are at it I would not mind the option of a S re-curve blade.
I have to agree to a certain extent , CLB designed this knife for a purpose (exceptional and wonderful ) , bigger may not be what the original had in mine . Chad has alot of stuff already available elsewhere , how about a fresh folder for Spyderco ? Just my thoughts MG2
nice job Will, a MaxiLava slightly bigger Lava would be awesome, but I'd want a non SS version for weight savings....like maybe a micarta or G-10 or even FRN version
I like the Lava as is & like Dialex i would like to see more of Chad's designs produced by Spyderco !
I would also like to see more of Alex's (Dialex) knives produced as well!
thanks, regards,SSB :spyder:
I really appreciate all of the request for new models. Many of you know that some of our models began this way; flys, P'kal, G-10 E4/D3, etc.
We work on many models all of the time, we hav 50+ going to SHOT.
I'm sure you realize that it is not possible to; develop the design, engineer, prototype, tool up, produce, inventory, promote, etc. every model requested. Time costs and dollar costs are quite high for a new model. 50-100K is common.
Will the model sell well? Will it sell well enough to recover our investment? Will the design be strong enough to carry a high ticket?
This means that all models have to be weighed against other models; eg: would we choose a larger Lava OR a new Alex design? Would we choose a larger Lava OR a Chokwe, OR a Dyad2, Barong, Phoenix, etc. What about a new Terzuola, Perrin or ?
When the requests are large enough, or the conversation long enough, we give it more attention. Very specialized models like the Superhawk, take a long time to bring to the market.
So while we always listen, Responding to those requests with a model is another question.
However, I might point out that we are blessed with "custom knife makers". In a case where 20 people want a particular model, why not go that route?
Chad could design a new model (just making them larger doesn't work well) to your liking, you could get together and hire a custom maker to make 20 pieces.
It seems that the U.S. "trend" for "legal carry" folders will be (unfortunately) in the direction of "smaller" knives anyhow.....so the maxi idea wouldn't make business sense anyhow
