Dealers & their opinions (shocked)
Dealers & their opinions (shocked)
I called up a benchmade dealer in Canada and the most surprising thing was how he was bad mouthing Spyderco. He has his own personal opinion, but there were many things he said that I truly could not believe.
1) Spyderco knives have the worst after market warranty, & benchmade, kershaw & Sog are better.
2) I tell my customers if they want a hard use knife do not buy Spyderco
3) The Spyderco Warranty is only good for 1 year and it says so on their box, while other companies have lifetime warranties.
4) I have broken the tip of every Spyderco knife I have had, and it wasn't due to prying, but just cutting card board and maybe hitting a staple or two.
5) Costs $25 to replace the screws of a knife, and turn around time is long.
6) There were so many people coming into the store, because the plastic clips kept braking.
The above was said by the dealer and hopefully I got it right. I said as much as possible regarding my positive experiences, but he was not gonna change his mind. He used to be a Spyderco dealer and isn't any more.
My opinion
1) Spyderco has the best warranty services, because of my own personal experiences. (I called them up regarding a FRN cricket and that it had no Pivot Pin & they said just send the knife in and we will do something about it)
2) I'd trust my life to a Spyderco, because I carry one everyday.
3) Spyderco has a lifetime warranty, and I did look at the box :D . i just sent in a FRN Cricket of all things. This knife is old and discontinues a while ago
4) I have never broken a tip with anyone of my knives. They are cutting tools and not prybars. If you want a prybar get a fixed blade, and how is it possible you break a tip cutting cardboard.
5) I have gotten screws sent to me while it was my mistake, because I lost them. Spyderco did this on their own as a kind gesture and do not charge people for this.
6) Overall plastic clips aren't metal & that issue has been fixed for a good while, but I can't comment on those clips because I have never had a knife that old.
Then to add more insult hey did you see we are using your spyderholes eh in the new lum design. I'm like yeah you guys took the design and didn't even pay proper royalties, because Spyderco is the one that made this opening feature famous.

You will never find Sal or anyone else at Spyderco ever "bad-mouthing" any other manufacturers. It's all part of the "leave shiny footprints" business approach and treating the other guys the way that you want to be treated. My hat is off to Sal & crew for taking the "high road"! :)

Tell him: Don't hate, congratulate..because :spyder: 's are the best
But really, I wonder what the true motivation behind his attitude is? I have only been into :spyder: co for about five months, and before I bought one I did plenty of internet research. I think if people are willing to go look for unbiased opinions they will see the sterling reputation that Spyderco has worked so hard for, and deserves.
I don't know about you guys but any salesman type that has to deride a competitor is not the guy I would buy from, cars, boats, knives doesn't matter.

I agree Kershaw has some good customer Service, but his opinions in my mind were very biased towards the other things.swingshot wrote:FWIW: Kershaw's customer service is just as good as Spyderco.
I've never owned an SOG so i can't comment on them.

I've encountered a dealer or two that was vehemently anti-spyderco. I was shocked a bit as well. In the end I figured that they get their 'trolls' in the store too. For example, people who expect CRK-type of fit and finish on a Delica 4 and give the shopkeeper a lot of grief when a particular screw doesn't match in looks. The dealer then turns around and carries his frustration about that customer with him to the next one. I think the overall picture is much better, Spyderco seems very loyal to its brick 'n mortar stores vis-a-vis Internet dealers, but that's an aspect most dealers probably will never read about.

What that guy said is idiotic.
Cold Steel may have a 1 year warranty but Spyderco does not.
Spyderco has sent me clips and screws in the past for free. I have also paid for clip kits too. I paid for the kits when I just wanted extra or I bent a clip and it was all my fault.
Spyderco makes some of the best Hard Use knives on the planet. I know guys that have carried an Endura in Kuwait and Iraq and the knives have never let them down.
The last comment about the plastic clips breaking I can understand a tiny bit. They did break on the older Endura and Delica but then again I know people who have used the old style with the plastic molded clip very hard every day and they still have the clip. I think it's just a fluke on some of the molded clip knives.
What did you even call the place for?

I betcha I know exactly who that is. I bought a few benchmades from the store I'm thinking of and when I asked where his spydercos were ( he's listed as a dealer in my area) he gave me a speech that was almost word for word what was described in the first post. I told him that it was unfortunate he thought that way and my dealings with spyderco's warranty and repair department were a pleasure. I actually needed a screw for one of my spydies and when I asked how much $ to send I was told simply to give my shipping address. :D If he only new how much business I would've thrown his way regarding :spyder: I haven't returned since.

There's a knife dealer I've dealt with in OR that didn't care for Spyderco. He was upset that when he sold them, he wasn't making the "rips" he was on BM, microtech, united cutlery swords etc. It was sort of a mall-ninja joint. Although he was impressed a bit with my cpm d2 mil. He didn't want to put it down :D .

Gun stores, knife stores, there is always a Cliff (the know it all postal worker on Cheers) in every store who has an opinion on every subject, but is usually wrong.markg wrote:Yea, if this guy's opinion bothers you, then be a Glock fan... You would not believe the crap you have to take in a gun shop about Glocks, and all of it is purely false or unsubstantiated.
You know what they say...
Opinions are like... :D Everyone has one.
The Glock talk above reminded me of a guy in a gun store in Las Vegas telling a customer to avoid Sig Sauer pistols because they would fail in freezing temps.
Aside from the absurdity of the statement, 1. he lived in Vegas so it rarely drops below freezing and 2. the store was a Sig Sauer dealer so he wasn't helping pay for his own salary.
People are strange.
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.
Most of what he said except for number 1), has some bit(s) of truth. Number 2) is probably fully true. The Byrds are made by Spyderco and they have a 1 year warranty as printed on the box. He likely has broken a tip or two. It does cost $20 dollars for repairs plus $5 for shipping if you send a knife in for "some" FUBAR screw repairs. It is very likely that some cusomers had broken plastic clips. The Dragonfly still has a plastic clip. It is probably a good thing that he is no longer a Spyderco dealer. Again, bits of truth with his over the top bashing. ON EDIT. 2) is explained further a few posts down.aj1985 wrote:a benchmade dealer in Canada ....... he was bad mouthing Spyderco. If he was bad mouthing Spyderco, you should bad mouth his business- by posting on the internet what poor service and info he provided... :eek:aj1985 wrote:I called up a benchmade dealer in Canada and the most surprising thing was how he was bad mouthing Spyderco.
