ATR : TI vs SS
ATR : TI vs SS
I guess this is a question for those of you who own, or at least have handled both.
Does the Ti version have any significant advantage over the Steel handled version?
A quick search suggested that the SS version is 9.5 Grams heavier than the TI version...... however i've also heard that the SS version is "smoother"
If the two were of the same value which would you pick?

For me the decision came down to $.
The Titanium was $250+ and the SS version was available from STP for $60 (after discounts). I'm prefectly happy with the stainless version. :)

I have both, and it seems the SS version is finished better than the Ti version, and the SS version does open and close more smoothly. However, I do like the Ti handle material better, and I think S30V steel is wicked on that blade. But they're both some of the sharpest blades out of the box I've ever handled.
I guess if they were the same price I would choose the Ti version, because I enjoy the Ti. But with values as they are, I just can't use it, so I'm thinking of selling my Ti version. It would pay for at least two or three good users.

I am VERY opinionated about the difference between the two. The Ti ATR SE is the best 175 bucks I've ever spent. The SS is a fair fascimile of the Ti but once you have both you will know they are not equals. The s30v blade is beautifully ground and is ground different than the SS VG-10 version, and if serrated the serrations are sharper but smoother on the Ti, they won't bind up on material, something I am afraid the aggresive teeth on the SS might do. The SS is a smoother opener out of the box but the Ti will loosen up after a few cycles and opening will become one fluid motion using your index finger and not your thumb to flick it open and in position. (This of course works with both versions). I think the Ti is balanced and weighted better for goofing around, but careful, it is VERY dangerous as it is so sharp it won't bounce off your skin, a light chop will get you a half inch deep cut, a smarter person then me would tape the blade when learning "tricks". The T1 handle is not slippery it has a natural grip greater than FRN in my opinion. They are NOT the same knife. If you have a chance to latch onto the Ti do it, I promise you won't regret it but IF YOU DO, swingshot, I will buy it from you for $225.00 Cash American.

I was looking at the ATR for a few years, but never bought one. Just found out that the dealer which I tried purchasing one from last week has them in stock at their supplier- so it is on its way! It is an SS SE version. I like the titanium and S30V combo- but for me the most important thing with my :spyder: is that I have the model I want in SE, as opposed to designer materials. Many of mine are, after all users.

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: I deffinetly think the Ti-Atr is much better then the SS, simpley due to the Ti-factor, and the blade steel it is made with! Besides, it's not only a Spyderco, it's a Golden Spyderco....The best made Knives ever(IMO) :) Please don't think I am complaining about the SS, because I have a SS/SE/DLC, and I carry it all the time, and sometimes paired with my Ti/pe. So, to those of you who don't have a Ti-ATR.....You Gotta GET ONE

I got the old SS out today and played with it and although I still do not consider the 2 versions true versions of the same knife I do like the SS a lot. Again it is balanced differently, handle is thinner (too thin?), and very slippery but the posts as to the quality, fit and finish are all right on. Better get both. I need the black one.
I'm surpised you would have to sand anything, I swear mine is as smooth as can be, I don't think T1 can glide against steel like steel on steel, the Titanium has a light texture the SS does not.
