recs for knife shopping: Indianapolis & San Jose

#1

Post by gilliu »

I looked at the dealer locator on the Spyderco website for these cities, but thought I'd ask the collective wisdom of the forum for any tips on places to knife shop in San Jose (where we're visiting family for Christmas) and Indianapolis (where we live).

Thanks,
Gil

San Jose, California? If so, there are some places in San Francisco if you don't mind the drive.
Ask me where I got my awesome SUPERHAWK!

San Jose is really not all that far from San Francisco, and as SoCal Operator pointed out there are some good stores there. I was in SF for a day, and I missed the chance to visit TAD Gear's retail store, as well as some other knife shop on the pier.

Indy 1500 Gun & Knife Show is held at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis about 5 times a year. There are several of us there that carry Spyderco knives. Generally get pretty good deals. Next show 11,12,13 Jan.

If you don't mind the drive to Fort Wayne from Indy then my recommendation is Grindstone Cutlery. Mike has the most extensive selection of knives I have ever seen in a retail shop and he really knows his knives.

If you do make the drive then be sure to bring all your knives with you. He will sharpen them to a point were they have never been before.

Where in Indianapolis do you live? I'm from there so knowing the area of the city might help. Back when Galyan's was around they always had a nice selection but if I remember right they were bought out and now it's crap. Mike Sastre is right the gun and knife show is great for almost all brands. Little cutlery shops were always popping up for a couple years at a time in the mall when i was a kid. Although a lot of the stuff they carry is mall ninja stuff they always had a decent selection of the good stuff too.

I'd also recommend the drive to Fort Wayne to Grindstone. You'll see quite a collection, and may find a prize or two.

TAD Gear's store is simply amazing, and the staff is eager to just stand around and talk about knives and gear for hours without even trying to push a sale. Decent selection of Spyders as well.
