Convert Spyder edge to Plain edge? Can it be done?

#1

Post by sharkattack »

My old Endura (SE) is getting pretty worn. I just got it back from Golden after being sharpened, and it's getting very worn. It's to the point where the points are rounded off. I hate to retire the knife, because it's still in great shape otherwise.

Can I have STR (possibly, if he does this kind of work) convert the Spyderedge to a Plain edge or should I just retire it?

Thanks,
S.
My collection so far: Delica SS PE, Delica 4 FRN PE, Endura FRN SE, Manix 2 G10 PE. Since I've officially been bitten by the bug, the collection is sure to grow... :)

You could pick up a new SE E4 on eBay for less than $30. Having your old Endura reground would likely cost more than that. My vote is to let your old one rest and get a new one.

Pretty much agree with The CoPilot. Am sure there are a number of folks out there who "could" do it. How the result would look, since the edge would pushed upward considerably in relation to the kick, and whether it would be cost effective or not compared to the price of a new Endura IV or a "new old stock" Endura III, are debatable.

That's what I was thinking guys. Thanks for the opinions. I'll let just keep it in the toolbox as a reminder of all of the trips it's been on. Lots of good memories.

A new Endura is on it's way.

If you are still curious as to how it might look, there is an older thread on bladeforums.com by a user named Vivi. He used a concrete block to grind away the serrations, then reprofiled it and it ended up PE. The look of the finished blade was not appealing, to say the least.

If it was me, and the knife has some sentimental value to me, I would send it to Tom Krein and have it re-ground. However, a new Endura doesn't hurt one bit. :spyder: :D

Just the thought of it makes me shiffer all over

Nothing wrong with retiring your beloved knife.

I would even argue that you retire it in its current state, as opposed to horribly disfiguring it, realizing that the thing is ugly as sin, and then retiring it in that condition.

... A retired knife is just another reason to buy another one...(like we all really needed another reason...!!! LOL

Here's a serrated C07 Police that got ground into a PE. Do you really want this to be the fate of your Endura?? I don't think so....

Don't do it. It will either cost you money or time not worth the result. Also keep in mind if you just "shorten" the blade, like was done with the Police above, you will end out with much thicker edge - draw a triangle and then cut it in half horizontally to imagine what I mean- and it's mainly thickness that affects cutting ability of the knife.
To make it properly you just have to create new grinds from a scratch. And that's not something you would want to do with already hardened steel...

Don't ruin it, give it away or something... Maybe STR would like it. ^_^

The serrations can be regound with a dremel, I did that to a Salt which has been heavily used to the point the serrations were very worn. It will only take 5-10 minutes, even being careful.

Regrinding the primary on a x-coarse stone is about a half an hours work to remove the serrations and keep the edge profile consistent in thickness, about 5-10 minutes again with power equipment.
