Yep, I think all the Rescues are hollow ground.

I believe the PE Rescue is a great knife. I own an Atlantic Salt, and there's just something about that big plain edge sheepsfoot blade that I'm drawn to.

Ever considered a Centofante IV?

Thanks for the quick replies :)

I am on the fence between a rescue and an atlantic salt. I want a pe sheepsfoot,
so now the question is VG-10 or H1.

I will consider the Cent4, since I am basically looking for a straight PE.

Between the older Rescues (which are the only ones you can find in PE) and the Atlantic, I'd lean toward the Atlantic for the better choil and jimping.

The current VG-10 Rescues are flat saber ground.

The PEs on Deacon's page look to be that way as well.

If you want hollow saber grind, that leaves the Atlantic.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

The old Mariner was more or less the predecessor of what we know now as the Rescue model. If you would be lucky enough to find one of them in a plain edge that would be a good one to have. There was knife show here in Missouri about a year ago and an exhibitor there had 2 used ones for $40 each and I'm really kicking myself for not getting them.

If I remember right I think there are 2 of 3 of them on Deacon's knife website. Now I don't know if they ever made the STainless Rescue model in PE or not. I've never seen one though.

I concur.

The choil (and consequently the ergonomics) on the Atlantic Salt is far superior to that of an older rescue.

For the record, I just checked and the PE version of the older ATS-55 FRN Rescue is hollow ground while, as you noted, the VG-10 one is not.

Unless it was another very limited production Japan market deal, like the PE/G-10 Civilian, they did not.

My one complaint with my PE atlantic salt is the choil :( . I cut a lot of rope with it and I find that sometimes smaller diameter line (less than one inch) tends to hang up in it.

Good point Pete, what works for me, or anyone else, may not work for you. There are few, if any, absolutes in that regard. Each of us can only say what we personally like, or don't like, and why.

It's mainly due to the way I cut rope, especially when I was lobstering. I bend the rope to be cut back on itself, put the blade in the bight, and either push away from me with the edge outboard, or pull upwards with the edge turned up. When I'm going fast, or the boat was pitching, I tended to catch the rope in the choil and when wearing slippery gloves there was the concern that I'd pull the knife out of my hand.

To put things in a bit more perspective, I would describe the hollow grinds on both the older ATS-55 Rescues, and the Atlantic Salt, as very shallow. I can't see there being a singificant performance difference between them, and the flat saber grind on the Sprint Run VG-10 PE Rescue.

For the record, since it has been mentioned, the Mariner also waffled back and forth between hollow and flat saber grinds over the years.
