Thinking about getting a Spyderco Sharpmaker
Honest opinions wanted on this, I have zero knife sharpening ability. Is this easy enough for a novice to put an edge on his or her blades without screwing them up???? I dont wanna risk screwing some of my knifes up. Any opinion on this appreciated positive or negative.

Yes, you need the diamond sticks for that.LJK wrote: the only negative reprofiling (removing large amounts of metal) is almost impossible.
I was always a poor freehand sharpener. I got some success with a Lansky jib set but that was a pain to use so I would end up letting my knives get too dull so it would be "worth it" to set up the jig.
In contrast, the Sharpmaker, besides being INCREDIBLY effective, can just sit on my table so I can take a couple of passes on the fine sticks every few days. :)
I like my sharpmaker a lot better than any other system I've tried - although the edge pro is better - if you have the time to clean up the mess after sharpening
I personally find the sharpmaker more accurate than the Lansky, DMT, etc since I can hold the blade vertical with less "angle slop" than is caused by the detachable guide rods on the clamp-style jigs.
My main complaint with the Sharpmaker is it has no truly course hone. (The diamonds are actually "medium", and the "medium" (brown) rods are really "fine". As a result, I think everyone definitely needs the diamond rods for reprofiling once they've sharpened the blade a dozen time or so. I've tried taping sandpaper & a Smiths diamond file to Spyderco's ceramic rods - and it's way too much trouble to avoid the rubber bands, tape, etc. Personally, I wish Spyderco would add a 2nd set of "course" diamonds rods to compliment their existing diamond rods.
Spyderco's ultrafine rods are also nice to have, but stopping on a belt loaded with an abrasive compound seems to polish better if you can hold the angle reasonably accurately freehand. (The angle isn't quite as critical for stropping). However, I use the ultrafine rods since it's so much more convenient and foolproof :D

My 2¢: The Sharpmaker is great for creating the microbevel if you are looking for either of the two angles it allows. Not the tool to reprofile the edge, however. I find I need a jig sharpener (for reprofiling or the "back bevel") and a Sharpmaker for easy upkeep.
FWIW, I disagree that the Sharpmaker is more accurate than jig systems. It's virtually impossible to tell by eye whether you've deviated a couple degrees on the Sharpmaker. On the other hand, it probably doesn't matter much when you're creating a small microbevel at the edge; the effect of a little variation is to "apple seed" the microbevel a bit, which doesn't seem to hurt the keenness of the edge at all.

The sharp maker is great. Best way to sharpen a knife if ya ask me.
at first I didn't like it because I didnt know how to sharpen a knife. Now with alot of practice, I kinda know what I am doing and can get a super i mean super sharp edge.
Go at a slow and steady pace, Haste makes Waste.
Good luck.
if you want course, go for a DMT 6: Dia- Sharp course stone, they run around $20 and from what I hear are great. just rubber band it onto the white stones.
Also just getting a regular AO sharpening stone and doing the same worked for me. Thogh a Norton will give you a better quality stone, ya may want to just go for the DMT as they are close enogh in price.

If you are new to sharpening, remember it takes a lot of time to get a good edge. It is work. It does not just happen. Also get the Diamond stones. I feel the Sharpmaker should come with them, as they make such a difference on the truly dull knives. I would factor the Diamonds into the cost of the system and get both at the same time. Also light pressure is all you need for the diamond stones, very light pressure. They cut the steel very well, but even with diamonds it takes time.
