Thousand-Post Mathematical Mystery Spyder Contest!!!

#1

Post by uhiforgot »

Well, now that I’ve made it into the 4-digit club, it’s time for a contest. But because I’m a math guy and want to be original, this one is going to be different than most.

I’m gonna make you THINK about this a bit, so put your thinking caps on and pay close attention!

Instead of choosing one number, you will be choosing TWO numbers. I have chosen a random real number between 0 and 1 (with 20 decimal places), and sent the number to Kristi. The winner of the contest will be decided by how close the ratio of his/her numbers is to the value I have chosen.

For example, let’s say somebody chooses a number A and number B (where A is less than B). The ratio of these two will be calculated as A/B = C. The number C that is closest to my chosen number by Sunday @ 8:00pm PST wins.

Rules:

1) Numbers chosen must be integers between 1 and 10,000.
2) Numbers chosen must be relatively prime. In other words: the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the two numbers must be 1. Here is an online GCD calculator: http://wims.unice.fr/wims/wims.cgi?modu ... search=gcd This will avoid a situation where two different sets of numbers have the same ratio.
3) One guess per person, please.

This should pretty much eliminate any need for a tiebreaker ;)

AND WHAT IS THE PRIZE? WHY WOULD I SUBJECT YOU TO SUCH MENTAL ANGUISH IN ORDER TO CHOOSE NUMBERS FOR A CONTEST???

I don’t know. Now this “I don’t know” is not because I haven't decided what it will be. It is because I honestly don’t KNOW what it will be since Kristi has not told us yet. That’s right, Kristi is dangling another one in front of us again, and nobody but Kristi knows what it is

See this thread for all the gory "details" thus far.

I have decided that Kristi’s mystery knife will be the prize in this contest. Even though the name (and thus also the price) is still a mystery, I will buy it and send it to the winner when it becomes available. In the event that the legality of the blade in your locale becomes an issue, we'll figure out something else.

Alright, let the guessing begin! Have fun everybody!!!

Congrats on your 1K bro  It's all downhill from there, you'll start racking up posts before you know it.

Thinking is overrated, so I'm going to take the easy way out.

I choose numbers 2 and 3. :p

I highly doubt the number you picked is
.66666666666666666666666666666666etc. :p This will give someone else a shot to win.

There isn’t any symbolism. The sea is the sea. The old man is an old man. The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The shark are all sharks no better and no worse. All the symbolism that people say is ****.
