Bob Lum, Dejavoo ???

hi all:

I have run across the Benchmade Dejavoo by Bob Lum. I would like to understand. Did Spyderco license the round hole to BM? That knife is good looking--like a more agressive version of his Spyderco folder with leaf blade. Do these designers have any limitations in terms of designing a very similar knife for more than one company?

I'm personally not all that impressed with the Dejavoo that Mr. Lum has done for Benchmade. And I like some of Benchmade's stuff but the designs he did for Spyderco are so much better than that Dejavoo design IMO.

I was very disappointed to hear that Mr. Lum ( who is one of my top 5 favorite knife designers by the way) is not going to do any more projects for Spyderco

I know we all don't like the same designs but to me to compare the Dejavoo to some of the other designs he has done in the past I must say that I consider the design "plain jane" at best. I do wish Mr. Lum all the success in the world because I do think that he is a class act and a great knife designer. But this one does not intrigue me much

The Dejeavoo looks almost exactly like his All Rounder. I must admit that while that is true, I much prefer the Chinese Folder. Much cleaner lines.

"Plain Jane" is good :D . I love its smooth lines and lack of humps and bumps.

It looks to me to be a slightly "dirtier", in terms of lines, version of the Chinese Folder. I am mighty tempted to get the mini one. My only concern is the size. Even the mini one seems very large for a pocket knife.

Nobody has come out and said that Spyderco licensed the hole to BM. All that was said was that "they had an agreement". However, in the past, when they have licensed the hole to competitors, they have always required that the competition credit Spyderco for it in their literature and advertising. Benchmade's failure to do this led to the license being revoked in the past, and Spyderco actually confirmed that Boker is using the hole under license (as well as Boker Crediting Spyderco in their literature and advertising). These are statements from members of the Spyderco team including Sal and Taz on these forums.

Neither company is saying anything else about it. However, IMHO Benchmade's neglecting to credit Spyderco (not to mention that neither company has said it is licensed, which is what is normally done) indicates that this was done by BM without permission. Basically one of those situations where the lawyers figure out a way to steal something and then say "take us to court if you don't like it."

It may be an optical illusion but the handle compared to the blade and the clip attached to it looks very large. The blade on the mini is closer to 3.5" than 3" and yes I consider that large (for me). But... I was refering to it's handle mostly.

I am with dedguy on the size of the mini D. I would think a mini would have less than 3 inches blade and handles no more than 4 inches. i would have wanted that also if it was smaller.

I like some of Mr. Lum's knives very much, but this one isn't among them, sory :o Not to mention it's a Benchmade :mad:

I've been carrying the full size for some time now, it is a smooth opener, opens with a flick of the wrist no need to use the hole (plus or minus depending on how you feel about that), sharp as ****, easy to sharpen, no blade play, solid lock up, fit and finish are top notch, the g-10 is smooth but grippy, I like curved g-10.. the design seems plain until you get to know it, there are many subtle things about it, the way it feels in reverse grip, the indentions on both sides for your fingers to grip, low ride clip.. it is a little too thick imo but so is the military..I had to threadlock the screw it was very bad about coming loose.. I own 14 spydies and one benchmade and there is only one other benchmade I am even slightly interested in and that one is a bali..

I joke that one of my favorite spydies is a benchmade (that's blasphemy I know) but it is just a joke.

Spyderco is #1 but with prejudice and politics aside I think MANY spydie-heads would enjoy this blade.

All good, just a little different. I think I have about every Lum-designed production folder now whether it be a Spyderco, Seki-Cut, or the new DejaVoo. I really enjoy the simple lines of his knife designs. The smaller DejaVoo is a very smooth handling knife, lightweight, and gets scary sharp due to the thin flat ground S30V blade. The Seki-Cut Lum Encounter is a great value and has a nice thin splinter picker D2 blade somewhat like the recent Spyderco Jess Horn. I'm disappointed that he has moved away from Spyderco but at least we still have the ZDP Chinese to look forward to.

Very true, BM, makes some fine balisongs. Frankly, there are only very few of their folders that hit my interest, but the balis... I must confess that's another story. :o
