The latest addition to my family of R's showed up today, and I must say the quadruplets are getting along just fine. I just hope the two that have teeth play nice with the others!
Can you guy's with R's and cameras show some pic's of yours? I love looking at these things! Enjoy the pic's.

oh, i really enjoy seeing these old R's!!!!

i especially like the clips that say "spyderco" -- i wonder why this can't be a feature on all of spyderco's clips? i know i'd appreciate it... :D

i've never gotten the pleasure of playing with an original R, but the R2 is currently my favorite EDC gents knife... a great combination of sophistication, "tech-y" strangeness, and durability... love that flat-ground VG-10!!!

Unless you're like me and prefer you lock bars without pockmarks, the only differences are in the blade. The handle shape and thickness are identical, so the two versions feel the same in your hand. As for the blade, for anyone looking for a user rather than a safe queen, the R2 is a much better choice. Aside from having a slightly less acute tip, an issue which unlike the Boye dent is fairly easy to rectify, the differences enhance usability. The laser cutouts in the original version look neat but cause drag when cutting certain materials, can actually snag in some, and make cleanup after some uses more tedious. Not to mention being lousy for getting peanut butter out of the jar. :D The jimping on the thumb ramp and choil plus the deeper, more rounded, choil, are definite advantages as well. Most would also consider VG-10 at least marginally superior to ATS-34.

I think the Original R is far superior to the R2. First of all, it blows it away in the looks department. The original is very classy and sexy looking whereas the R2 is pretty drab. It also has a much better feel to it and is quite a bit lighter due to the ridiculously cool looking cutouts in the blade. I think the jimping on the spine and choil actually detract from the appearance of the R2 and IMO, ATS-34 is every bit as good as VG-10. For me, there really is no comparison, the original wins hands down. Besides, try beating eggs with a solid blade sometime!

Congrats on the new R's Fellyjr!

I love my original R, but prefer the R2. The jimping, solid blade and grey color (hey, it's something else than black!) are all features why I prefer it over the original R. I also like the added (whispering now

) Boye dent.

The R, however, is the more interesting collectible. Apart from the blade, I've also heard the production process was quite hard; with parts shrinking once they reached their destination, so a climate control production room had to be arranged.

Ok, Ok, Felly. I think you knew this post would pull me out of the weeds :D Congrats on your second set of R's. Great shots as always. Now we just need to find you a numbered one!!! :) IMO the original R is truely a work of art. Nothing compairs to the lines and the balance of these knives. Everything about it is SWEET.

I have to agree with you that the clip on these babies is one of the best looking clips that the Spyderco peeps have ever produced. :D

Nice collection. I used to have one of the Rs. It got to where is was worth more to collectors than the users so I sold it. I have always liked it and wish there was a way that I could afford to use one but I don't see spending $200 on a collectable just to get used as being smart. I do carry a few collectable Spyderco like my C54 large Calypso, G-10 Police, and Centofante II among others. These are not yet the most valuable Spydercos but they are such great users that it would be a shame not to use them.

I think the R-2 is a great knife as well. I use mine. I also think the "S" is a better knife than anyone lets on. I carry and use that one as well and it is great.

hey felly....I wish I could make that assessment....howz about sending one my way so I can do that head to head comparison?

I honestly can't choose ATS34 over VG10 though....esp from an edge-retention standpoint on a clipit.....I'm only judging this based on using CPM154 blades....as I'm not gonna use my Ti Lum C46....which is my only blade with ATS34.... :)
