BRG Endura ZDP comments?

#1

Post by The Mastiff »

I recieved my PE BRG, ZDP endura today.First of all, it arrived in perfect condition. Not a single flaw, which is what I expect from Spyderco anyway.

The blade is straight, lock up is tight with no movement. Grind lines perfect, edge shaving sharp. Non laminated, solid, ZDP 189 blade.

I have been carrying an Endura since they came out. I even still have my first FRN Endura bought when they hit the Raleigh area. The clip is even intact, and I still carry it now and then.

That first endura really changed my taste and carrying habits in knives. I have an endura representing every major change since then. What a difference time has made.

I really can't imagine a better made knife for the money being possible. This is an all around better knife than some knives I have with prices going up to the several hundred dollar range.

Here is a knife that sells at a street price comparable to what some
other manufacturers want to give you Aus 6 or 8, 420HC, even 440A.

Value wise, IMO it's the best production folder on the market. It might not satisfy those that MUST have stag grips, or titanium framelocks, but cutting wise it takes a backseat to none.

I couldn't have dreamed up or imagined this knife back when I first began carrying, then collecting knives over 30 years ago. YMMV. Joe/Raleigh

So, you don't like it? :) Seriously, congrats on the knife. I have not picked up an Endura of any variation yet, but this one sounds very nice.

Thanks for mini review . This is one model I have been looking forward to get , I have been rotating the SE VG10 version and the Wave . I agree with you Joe , the new Endura is one ofthe best bargains . What blade set up ? I may go CE since I do not have one in this configuration in my collection .Take care MG2 .

Manix Guy, I was fortunate enough to get my order in early enough to get a plain edge. Perhaps next month, or the month after I'll get the serrated version.

I'm waiting to see how many people end up being disatisfied with the steel or knife for some reason. I must be lucky as the Spydercos I get always seem perfect. The one exception to that rule was the ZDP Jess Horn had a slightly uneven lamination line. It didn't affect performance or my confidence in the knife.

With all the talk about the caly ZDP's, both of those I bought were perfect as well. I must be real fortunate. I do always give a list of checks to make when I buy at an online store though. The better ones like GP, NGK, and the KC have always looked out for me. :) , sending me excellent knives. They will pick through them if you ask and they're not too swamped for time.

Regards, Joe

Glad to hear that you got the ZDP goodness. I to recieved my PE BRG endura. Its a beast. As of yet I haven't had a chance to break it in. Mine is completely flawless and actually seems more solid than my waved endura. I need to take a pic of my flock of ZDP at some point. Enjoy the endura.

I have this doubt: is the new ZDP-189 blade ground at the same angle as the older VG-10 E4?
I'd like an E4 with a finer (smaller) edge angle and I'm not adventurous enough to do a reprofile myself.

I am hoping to get my Enduras too, once the dealer receives stock. Mind sharing where you got yours? if my dealer takes too long, I'll order first from someone else...

:spyder: I've given up on zdp-189, I touch up every day as I like sharpening for it's own sake but zdp-189 is a pain to resharpen compared to s30v or even vg-10. That said I'll probably get one to go with it's delica counterpart, also, I like the pretty green handle. :o :spyder:

Spyken, Get ahold of Justin at Grand Prarie. As far as the ZDP being difficult to sharpen? Not for me. I wouldn't want to begin a major reprofile without a diamond system , but that goes for several steel compositions and not just ZDP. ZDP is easy to sharpen considering how wear resistant and hard it is. Compare it to S60V, or S90V and you'll appreciate it's cleverness.

I don't have any way to accurately measure the edge angle, nor even a caliper to measure thickness. I will say it's just right for the Endura's intended job of medium/heavy work in a long lasting , high quality knife.

Sorry, I have no way to take pictures. My ex honestly did take the camera with her and I've not been in a hurry to buy a new one. I've never really been a camera type of guy. Joe/Raleigh

Rec'd my stunningly perfect BRG Endura 4 this AM from GP.

Thank you Spyderco for consistently delivering dreams come true at an affordable price.

How it could be any better, besides incorporating the Emerson Wave, is beyond my imagination.

Sharp...When you look up sharp in Webster's you see this edge.
Lock...Bedrock solid.
Color...The British want to know how you got your hands on their formula Sal.
Jimping, grip, index hole size, laser work, engraving, finish & fit are outstanding.

All the best,

Oregon

ZDP 189 hasn't been tough at all for me to sharpen, but I run my ZDP knives (actually most all of my knives) very thin which kind of takes steel out of the equation for sharpening difficulty. If you are running a thin backbevel and sharpen a microbevel even the "tough to sharpen steels" are easy to sharpen because you are only sharpening a tiny strip of steel. If you sharpen the whole bevel then steel type becomes much more of a factor in sharpening.
