The Big Boys

#1

Post by Harry White »

When I first started collecting Spyderco knives, I was drawn to the smaller offerings -- Delica, Kopa, SPOT, Caly, etc.

Lately, however, I've been gravitating toward the Spyderco "big boys," namely the Military and Manix. While they are a bit big for my normal EDC needs, there is something about the quality of Spyderco that really shines in these larger blades.

Anyone else find their preferences change from small to large knives (or the other way around)?

Here a couple pics on an overcast and misty afternoon showcasing my two big :spyder: s. (Fob on the Manix was made by Irish Lager and given to me courtesy of Denn -- thanks!) [Picture quality is still not where I want it -- I mistakingly used the flash outdoors and that washed out the shiny blade detail -- oh well, live and learn... :o )

I would normally be attracted to the smaller knives as well but there is no denying the build quality and sheer beauty of the Peel Ply CF Military! I recently bought an S30V CF Mili and like it so much that I will be getting the BG-42 CF soon. It's funny how your tastes in knives can switch up on you in mid stream. ]http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/f ... G_2888.jpg[/IMG]

The small Spydies are my candies, but the "big boys" have appeal too.

Harry, you have to add a Chinokk in your big-boys-duo :)

Harry, I started out thinking Calypso Jrs and Natives were big, now my two favorite carries are the Stretch and full size Persian. Since I carry loose in my back pocket, anything much longer than them does not ride well, but I do appreciate the quality of the Military, Manix, and Chinook.

I started out with big folders; Police and Military. I've been attracted more and more to the smaller folders. Yet, I'm still hoping to add a Chinook III to my collection! Mainly smaller folders for me, but one or two big boys are a must IMO.

peter -- yes, i do indeed need a chinook! another one on that ever-growing "wish list."

paul -- i carry my knives loose in my pocket as well, and agree that the bigger knives are (understandingly) more "noticeable." i brought my manix to work the other day and, unlike most of my other spydercos, i never "forgot" it was in my pockt.

wouter -- i completely agree -- even for those who prefer and use primarily smaller knifes, having a larger folder (at least one) is a must.

Big Spyder questions?

#8

Post by JD Spydo »
I started out with big folders]

I just got a Chinook in a trade from a very trusted trading knife buddy. He said he thought it was a Chinook III. It is a flat grind blade. What is the difference between the II model and the Chinook III model. IS the blade grind the difference?

Also do any of you know how many of the Police model were flat grinds? I had 2 G-10 Police models which were flat grinds but I've never seen one with a stainless or a CF handle??

I liked the Manix.. didn't really like the Military though. Just seems to long and thin for my taste. Also, like the stretch. Don't really like the Kraton inlays.. they tend to snag the pocket when clipping and un-clipping. Manix.. definitely a great knife. I need to get a new one.

my choice in size is dependent on the kind of work i'm doing... or if i'm just cruising around town. when out and about in the NKP world, i keep my limit at the legal 3" cutting-edge...which is more than enough to take care of my mundane and incidental daily cutting chores.

outdoors or in the bush/wilderness/etc., i prefer larger folders, yet will still carry some smaller ones.

That CF BG42 military is SOME knife. I have never had a knife cut like this! And boy, does it stay sharp. I carry more big knives than small. I farm and like the big boys outdoors. Carry the small one, Lil Temp on Sundays.

Yes, the only discernable difference between a Chinook II vs. Chinook III is the flat grind for the III. ;)

Flat Police are pretty rare JD; it must be the donuts... :D No idea on numbers.

Nice set up Harry

After carrying my SS Police/SE for a few weeks and my Endura4/SE for the past days, I just clipped my Delica 4/SE VG10 to my pocket. To be honest, the Delica is big enough for all of my cutting needs and I don't have to be scared to use that one in public in front of NKP's ;)

I do like the big Spydies though. There's nothing more beautiful IMO than the long fully serrated blade of the Police.

And I'm still hoping for a fully serrated Manix  (how about it Sal? :D )

Indeed, there are a couple black and blue G-10 Police models in full flat grind. Beautiful, what can I say. The only SS Police in flat grind is the Mini Police Necklace. ;)

Agreed! Good looking, futuristic I may add, and it cuts (but I suppose you're not quite the right person to be convinced of the advantages of a sharp SE blade) ;)

Yeah Sal, no compromise anywhere else in the design, why pussyfoot around with a partial serration? :D

Nice assortment you have there.
I had to migrate to big folders because they were asking all the time: "is there a Chinook in your front pocket?" and it was only a Ladybug!   :p ;)
