What was your most anticipated Spyderco

#1

Post by gull wing »

and did it fulfill your expectations?
Mine was the Para Military. It was a knife that was talked about, it seems, for years. I had handled, and used the Military a little, but it was much too big for me, I thought. A good frend who swore it was the best knife (Military)he ever had, and I could believe that, a slim, lightweight, knife with a thick strong blade. I had not, at the time seen a knife like it, but I wanted a smaller knife. The Para did not disappoint, it has been a great knife for me.

Now, with a new version in the works (who knows when), I look forward to the "new" Para. Wonder just what will they will do with it.

Mine was probably the Manix. I had handled one prior to purchase at the SFO, and it fell like a hand full and a pocketfull. I was just a little leary of it. But then as I evaluated my EDC needs and realized that I associated Weight with sturdiness I came to realize that the Manix is the one knife I had been waiting for.

I have not been dissapointed and carry one Every Day.

Mine is the Starmate,

Recently added.
I now understand why it was so difficult to get one in new condition.
Great blade shape and nice handle with good ergo's.

Probably the Captain. When I first saw proto pics I was totally in love but thought it may be too large for me to carry or I wouldn't be able to afford it. Size wise it's just right and I was able to afford it and now love the **** out of it. In my top 5 for sure.

To some of you this will come as no surprise but my most anticipated Spydie was my first Blue Lum. To me this is the "Holy Grail" of knives and so much so that I had to go on a mission to find more.
IMO it is the sleekest and most classy looking knife Spyderco has made to date.

Spyderco's German distributor, Acma Reus had the first pictures of both the Stretch and the Schempp Persian in their online catalog, once I saw them I haunted eBay every day till they showed up. :D

For me its an ongoing question. My ATR was tghe first one I was really anticipating. Then it was the ZDP caly jr. then it was the Adventura forum then the lava. There always seems to be another one I am anticipating.

Experimental Walker.. although I don't own one, and doubt I'll be able to FIND one.. I guess that'd be my "Holy Grail".. why, I'm not sure.. it's just a lovely knife. I'll haunt ebay until I get one.. even if I have to pay $200. Maybe one day... *sigh* :(

Without a doubt the ZDP delica sprint. I missed out on the first sprint, the laminated calypso. I over did it on the solid ZDP delica preordering more than I needed as I was taking no chances on missing such a desirable knife. I ended up with 7 ZDP delica sprints and 6 Jess Horns. I still have about half of each, but no copy of the first sprint. It still eludes me.

Likewise the Ti/S30V ATR continues to elude me. The longer I wait, the more determined I will be to find a NIB old stock Ti ATR. Joe

The Ever Elusive Titanium ATR

#10

Post by JD Spydo »

There was one Spyder that I literally had to almost go through CONGRESS to get>> and that was the Titanium ATR. I started my quest for that knife in August of 2003 and it was December of 2004 before I finally corraled one :o

Actually there was another Spyder that almost took me as long to find. I began my quest for a C-56 Spyderco Zowada model with a VG-10 blade. I started looking for one of them in the Spring of 2004 and it was the Spring of 2005 before I finally landed one.

Actually I think the VG-10 Zowada is now one of the 3 hardest to find Spyders period. Try to find one if you don't believe me :o

Most anticipated were the Ti ATR, the Adventura and the Almite Walker.
The first two were just so innovative and too cool to believe, and I love my buddy's CF Walker (bummer they're so scarce), so getting the chance to own a version of the Walker with different scales was a treat.
I also fell in love with the Persian from the first pic I saw, so I was happily waiting for it.

It may surprise some of you, but apparently I'm a bit weird. My most anticipated was the Volpe. Considering how well it is put together, the tight lock up, solid design, great materials, and the cutting edge the flat grind gives over other grinds, it far far far far far, did I mention far exceeded my expectations.

I didn't even know they made a VG-10 version. I thought they where all in aus-8. No wonder its a hard to find.

Mine is the Zabofly and the Hossum collab.

I guess for a clipit it would be the Lava ....a knife that has met and exceeded all my expectations.... :D
the knife feels incredibly "natural" in the hand....almost feels like a pistol holding it in the forward grip....reminds me of what I read about the M. Ayoob collaboration....that makes the Lava feel like a natural extension of the hand..in the reverse edge out grip it also feels "spot on" in my hands.... :)
Holding a closed Lava feels like an ideal Kubotan-like device....In my small hands the front part or "butt" of the handle protrudes just enough from the tops and bottom of my clenched fist...to inflict some real pain on a perp... :p ;)
Honorable mention goes to the Caly3...what a great knife!
and I've gotta mention the Szabofly too....still anticipating my 1st dance with this one... :D

For me it's not "What was your most anticipated Spyder?" but rather, "What is your most anticipated Spyder?"

For me, it is the new, revamped Paramilitary. I am really looking forward to seeing how this one will turn out.

Military, Manix, Para, Caly3, new Para.

For now the Military and the Para are the best knives I've ever owned. The Para is my EDC since I got it, cause it fits my needs perfectly.

A Caly3 is on the way, time will tell. I hope the renewed Para won't be changed too much, cause it is almost perfect as it is.

Full sized Persian. I decided to get one as soon as I saw a pre-production photo. It's a great knife, Ed. Too bad the market did not welcome it with enough vigor to give it a longer production run.
