Unique SS CE Native?

#1

Post by Steelman »

Received this great looking Native from some friends for Chrismas. :D After closer inspection it struck me kinda odd that it would have VG-10, but no David Boye style dent. Has anyone seen one quite like this? Not really sure, thought I would ask the experts.

Thanks,

Must have been sitting on some dealers shelf since before the Dent came along.... Nice piece, I like combi edge.
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

Thanks Zen, Merry Christmas by the way. What struck me as being odd is without the dent you would think it would of been the AUS-8 steel would'nt it?

Mine is almost identical to yours but is AUS-10 vice VG-10, sans Boye dent as well. Nice knife!

You bring up a good point. Is it actually grinded before or after the knife is assembled?

I was under the impression that all SS Natives were AUS-10 and combo edge. There were a few plain edge models but not many.

I also didn't think that any SS Native came with VG-10.

VG-10 Native

Kristi said in an earlier thread that Spyderco had upgraded the steel to VG-10 recently for the SS Native. I have one in front of me here as well as a PE and PS SS Native in AUS-10.

I hadn't noticed that it didn't have the Boye dent!

Thanks for pointing it out Steelman! Nice photo by the way! :)

Cheers, Ken

Edited to add: The SS Plain Edge Native in VG-10 is a must Sal! PLEASE!

David, from the time the SS Native was introduced, around 1998, up until about 2003, it was offered in both plain and combo edge. Until very recently it used AUS-10. While the catalog illustrations, and the "stock" illustrations used by most dealers, have shown a Boye dent for several years, I cannot recall seeing an acutal photo of a stainless Native which has one. So not sure whether this case represents a production anomaly, or merely that art does not always follow life. :D

Frankly Ken, I'd rather see a "dent-free" PE version of the FRN S30V one. :D Recently purchased another PE GIN-1 Native just to have a user Native without the dent.

You aren't a lover of the dent are you! :)

I must admit that I am glad that it seems to have been getting smaller in the latest :spyder: I've been buying. :) Or is that just wishful thinking?

Now I ask you Ken, when has a dented anything ever been more desirable than an undented specimen? ;) :D
