With all of this talk about the original R being a classic.

Which current knives in the future will be the hot items to have in a collection in ten or 15 years?

Maybe the new S? or maybe the Adventura or maybe the Volpe. How about a Poliwog.

What drives a knife to be a classic?

Your thoughts?

I think just about all the custom collaborations will be going through the roof simply because a lot of them were only made in small quantities based on demand, according to the old catalogs.

though technically not a "current" knife, i think the FB Temperance is destined for classic status down the road. that's a sweet chunk of vg-10!

1st option
Let's do some maths :D
Classic = (Great knife)x(small number)2
To become a classic, could we say that a knife must first be a commercial failure before being recognised as a good knife?
classic example would be Caly jr.
In other words, a highly collectable spyderco is a good knife we failed to spot on time. So I hope there will never be another spyderco classic ;)

2nd option
As fellyjr said, collaboration knives should usually be a pretty safe bet.
With my very limited experience, I will stick my neck out and predict that the Green Lum Chinese will be in the top 3 spyderco classic of all times.
Among FB, Perrin's streetbeat should be a good one...

My #1 guess would be the ZDP-189 Calypso Jr.

I can only guess, but it seems to me that production numbers have much greater effect on desirability of the knife in the future than it’s popularity right now, or even how good it is.
The more popular models should be produced in greater numbers. More people would buy them. More knives would eventually end up on secondary market…
You’ve got my point.
Based on it, some models that you do not hear much about, might become future stars. Volpe and Kopas come to mind. Kris might be much hotter than Persians. I do not know how well Ocelot and Captain sell, but I do not hear that too many people EDC all those great knives all the time.
Just my two cents…
But if somebody posts new pictures of future “Calys”, “R”s, “Lums” , or whatever, all bets are off and people will start buying like crazy. Again! :D :D :D

I believe that it will be the kopa. Each variation is 600 pieces. At some point the demand will wane and it will be discontinued(NGK has already discounted the apple coral, probably due to slow sales). So in 10 years when you want the gents knife that's not as 'fugly' as the rest of the line, the kopa will be in higher demand. It is also a well constructed clipit that will easily out live me.

Look around you and see what prices virtually all out of production models are bringing. :)

It would be easier to ask what current Spydies will not be hot items in ten or fifteen years. ;) I have to agree with Chris though, the Kopa in all its guises will become very collectable. :D

Sprint runs are always a good option too! :D

Hrm, it depends on the defination of classic

Amazing pieces that didn't sell well and are sorely missed:
Dodo and Salsa make my list and I'm sure there are more that I don't own (Lil'T, catcherman, Temperance and others?).

Knives that are currently being sold and deserve constant improvement and variations:
Kiwi, Kopa, Delica, Endura, Lava, Cricket, Captain, Mili, Para, Police, Rescue, Salt series, Native, Civillian, Navigator, UKPK, Caly, um... I know I'm forgetting a whole lot, but basically I'm trying to say that every spyderco knife is a classic.
