Hey! Gun guys!

Post by xdrewsiferx »

Ok so I am moving into a floor apt next week.
The only means of self home defence I have at this time are my art knives and spyders. My wife is very anti gun but I grew up in a very pro gun life. I have been shooting since I was 5 years old and to this day at 100 yards I can still hit golf balls with my 22. So to get to the point.. I talked with my wife and she agreed to let me get a pistol if it has a key code lock system no Keys or locker style locks. So now to get to it. I want to buy a gun but I have no idea of what. Price is not an issue at all but I want it to look very aggressive so if someone enters our home I don't "need" to shoot if they see the gun.

At this point the guns that have stood out to me are
  • HK USP.45 Tac
  • Baby DE
  • Full DE
  • Walther P99 (green)
  • SIG P225
But at this point that is just what I like of the look and feel the full DE is like holding a Milk jug in your hands on a pistol grip so its about in the last other then its bad ***.
Also before you suggest it.. No glocks..... I personally Hate glock I had one Jam on me and if I were to fire one more round it would have probably taken my hand. So no glock

Any gun, from any mfg can have a malfunction. I think that Glock SHOULD be on your list. I used to bad mouth them until I bought one. I would not trade my G27 for anything!!
That said, off of your list, I would probably get the Walther P99. It feels great in the hand and has the adjustible backstrap for fitting different sized hands. I have a Walther P22 and I have really enjoyed it. How about one of the new S&W M&P models? They are getting pretty good reviews.
Good luck in you quest.

Don't buy something so darn big you can't shoot it correctly.

It sounds like you will only get one pistol so pick a cream piece. Out of your short list I'd choose the Sig. A very high end piece known for great accuracy. I enjoy shooting mine.
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

On the Glock, try different models. They fit differently. That full size DE would be a hand full!

Hey Drew, I want a Baby DE too!

My best friend has a Walther and swears by it, and my other buddy had a S&W that he absolutely loved!!(9mm). I am personally(someday... ), going to get either a Baby DE or a Snubnosed .357.

Have fun deciding!!

I carry an HK P200SK in .40SW.Got the double action model as it has exposed hammer which I prefer  Nice and small. Best gun I ever owned! I also have a Kahr PM9. Great for concealed carry. Both have always been reliable!

ONE MORE FOR THE SIG!

I wouldn't limit yourself to considering only one model. They all have different fits and feels. I'm a huge proponent of Sigs, and find they outperform most other guns (I've tried a few...). I like the 225, as it has an single stack grip, so it fits nicely. However, you're limited on rounds. But if you're accurate, who cares. Most important is fit. If the gun fits you, you'll be accurate with it. However, function (performance is important for reliability).

Also, I would NOT advise buying a gun on how it will look to a bad guy. They won't likely see it, and if they do, they won't care if it's a .22. They'll likely treat it the same. Remember, in a gun fight, you rarely have time to think "Hmm, is that a .22, or is a .357?". They're brains will just scream "GUN", just like yours would in that situation. So, in short, keep it base on fit and performance.

you all make good points and yours trihonda is a very good one.

I have no idea of what I want to be honest as long as its fun to shoot and I can mod it with surefire and all the other goodies. but at this point looks like SIG and Walther are the winning two. I am kinda surprised that none of you have said anything about the HK.

Best Gun..

Hi guys i AM NEW TO YOUR SITE AND i JUST LOVE IT! Let me start off by saying that I am way into any and all things guns and knives. I spend countless hours reading about guns and knives and collecting the ones I want (sometimes the ones I don't want) If I had to pick only 1 gun for the home Out of your list it would be the HK. I would chhoose the USP 45. The tactical is way overpriced compared to the USP. It is a fine weapon as I also own one. You can buy an addapter for the light rail that alows you to use a nicer priced tactical light in the $100.00 dollar range as opposed to HK's expensive one. All that being said, I am guessing from your list that price is not an issue at all. (must be nice!) I would not overlook the glock. I understand your concerns but that problem you mentioned might have been caused by the ammo used and not the gun itself. Glock is probably one of the hardest used most dependable firearms of our time. kinda like the spyderco of guns! Plus the price is great! Try a local gun range and rent some for the day and see what you shoot the best. I don't care what anyone says, no gun no matter how cool it is or how tactical it is or anything else can beat or replace the feeling that you have when you have a gun that fits! one you shoot well. one that you make your own. Thats the confidence I want if I ever have to protect my family with it God forbid.

I have a Glock .40. Love it.
Wife has a .357 S&W (LadySmith) I also think is a great gun.
For the occasional shooter, I think wheel guns have some real advantages in ease of use/dependability.
I also have a S&W .50! Man, what a beast THAT thing is. But it's a blast to shoot.

Gotta say though, it it's only for home defense (not carry), I'd choose my Ithica 12 guage.

I have a Sig 225 and I love it. It fits my hand like it was custom made for it. Because of this it points right on target for me providing quick target acquisition.

the most important thing to consider is if you can attach a spyderco as a bayonet.

good luck finding a gun. i'll stick with knives and big, bright flashlights :)

EDIT what happens if you miss--will the bullet go through the wall and hit your neighbors?

I think you might want to reconsider your criteria a little bit. You want to consider what the area surrounding your apartment is like. Are there people living next door, or is the area clear? Also, you CANNOT count on just the appearance of a gun deterring an attacker. I can understand that the DE is large and intimidating, but what if you have to shoot and someone and miss. Are you going to be able to fire a quick and accurate follow up shot?

I'd choose any of the other guns off your list over the Desert Eagle. The Hk is still a bit large, but from what I understand, it is very controllable in its caliber. The longer sight radius may offer some accuracy advantage over the other ones, but in a small environment like an apartment, I'm not sure how much of an advantage that is. One I do have experience with is the P99. Mine is the QA (Quick action) version, and it can be effectively disabled by pushing in the decocking button. All that's needed to recock the gun is a pulling the slide back about 1/4".

So to answer a few of the questions people have for me.

So no 12g because one of the only things that made my wife ok with this was a lock box that when we have kids there's no way they can get in with out knowing hte exact code (something ill never wright down).

The 12g would be my first choice if I had the ability.

The second question that I see is well its an apartment.

Our apartment Is on the bottom Flore in the corner. So we have 2 door ways one that goes onto our deck and one that is our front door. our apartment is in the back area of the complex. Out the back door is thick woods and a hill side. when you walk out the front door its parking spots and a big hill. So we are kinda hidden in and a stray bullet would only go into trees and then dirt unless i was pointing the gun up or to the wall both things that I can not ever see my self doing.

:spyder: I shoot a 45 calibre glock30, the best concealed carry gun yet made. I also like .44 snubbies. :spyder:

I personally own an HK USP in 9mm and love it. Best pistol I've ever owned. Ridiculously accurate, I can hit man-sized targets at 100 yards (probably farther away, but never tried it).

I've owned Glocks, Sigs, S&Ws...all are excellent, so you won't go wrong.

One thing I have to caution you on, though...do not count on an assailant shrinking away in terror when you display a firearm (even the mythical shotgun). Often, criminals aren't convinced you'll use it. Most criminals I know (I know a few thousand) have already been shot/stabbed several times, so it's nothing really new to them, certainly not as big a deal as it would be to us "normal" folk.

If you purchase a firearm, purchase it assuming you'll have to one day utilize it, and at the same time, hoping you'll never have to.

Also keep in mind (I'm sure you already know this) that pistol bullets will travel through MANY layers of sheetrock and other building materials, so neighbors might be in danger. Shot placement is paramount.

From your list, i would probably go with the sig, although none of the choices are bad. Personally, i love glocks, and would recommend one to anybody(my first instinct as i started reading the thread initially was to do so until it was stated that you did not have a fondness for them.) However, just like knives- firearms are a very personal matter that is subject to ones personal touches. the glock may feel great in my hands (and they do) but not so in yours, etc. anyway, have you looked at a .357 at all? something like a smith 686. Barrel lenghts range so you can find one you like, and with the .357 you have the fun factor, plus can save a little. with my 357's i practice with mostly .38 special loads, then try a few rounds with 357 ammo- cuts cost, and shooting 38's is a ball (well, shooting anything is a ball) sorry for the length of the post, but one more thing- as far as home defense goes- the best deterent to any would-be wrongdoer is a dog. especially one that makes noise when people get too close. don't know if your complex allows pets, but it is always a thought. -td
