Temperance FB New renditions????

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

Like the old Joni Mitchell song says "You Don't Know What You Got Till It's Gone">>> Well that was certainly the case with myself and my discovery of the fixed blade Temperance model. I find myself really regretting that I didn't get more of them when I had the chance to get them. But I'm not the only one that was late to the party. It seems like it's only been recently and of course after it's discontinuation that the FB Temperance is now very much appreciated.

With that being said and now that it's been established as a great fixed blade we should chat about the possibility of making variations of the FB Temperance. I say it would be great to have a larger version and a version that would maybe be somewhat smaller or ever close to the same size with a Micarta handle. But I'm sure you all have an idea of what would make up a great variation of the Temperance.

The basis design is fantastically functional and ergonomic. The handle in my opinion has super ergos but a lot of folks for what ever reason are adverse to FRN handles. So wouldn't one with a Micarta handle make sense? Also a bigger version for serious meat cutting and other chores which demand a big blade seem appropriate. I would love to hear what you all think would be a great variation of this "Classic To Be". I truly think with the Temperance paving the way and these new Hossum collaborations I think Spyderco is definitely staking their claim in the fixed blade market. :spyder:

The FB Temperence's design was right where it should have been, especially now. The larger knives will be covered by both the Schempp & Hossom designs, and smaller is covered by the Moran designs along with the Perrin Street Beat.

So, if it is brought back, I say make a "high line" variation (e.g., micarta or stabilized wood handle, [faux] horn or antler, bone) with design improvements (e.g., filework(?)/jimping) where applicable.

My Temperance SE is my go-to knife in the kitchen. In fact, it has replaced most of my other "junk" kitchen knives. It is a beast in cutting through meats and vegetables, opening food packages, and especially cutting pizza! Which leads me to ask -- when is the Spyderco Pizza Cutter coming out?? :)

But to answer the question posted, I would leave the Temp alone as far as blade shape/size, given the new FBs coming out, but would love to see a handle upgrade to G10 or Micarta or some exotic wood. OK, MAYBE a 0.5 -1.0 inch increase in blade lengh -- I could live with that.

A buddy on Bladeforums who is not a member of this Forum told me last night that he would absolutely love a bigger Temperance model. He said one with a 6 1/2 inch to 7 inch blade would help him accomplish a lot of stuff in the kitchen.

I've had another guy I know who lives in an area with a lot of big wild game hunting is on the agenda. He says one with a larger blade of that shape and with the same ergonomic handle would be a super blade for processing wild game.

I feel a bit like the last guy in class to learn his ABCs because I was certainly late to the party on this one. If you guys don't just literally buy out the Temperance models at Sierra Trading Post this weekend then you are really going to miss out on one of the best fixed blade designs ever. Until about February of this year I mainly focused on collecting Spyderco's folders. The fixed blades are truly a treasure hidden out in plain view. I didn't believe in this knife until I used it extensively. Get them while they can be got. :spyder:

The Temperance is a wonderful knife but I've never found it it be a wondeful kitchen knife. The Spyder edge Temp raises sheer **** on recalcitrant vegies and artisan crusty breads but my reletively cheap Wustohs, Forschners, etc are task specific and fearsome killers of kitchen dwelling foodstuff.

I wish I had the all the Spydie kitchen knives, ie the big ones of years gone bye... My Wustohs, Forschners et al... and are pretenders to the throne. Only a Spyderco could be rightful aire in my kitchen (spelling in question) PLEASE Kristy a spell checker with thesourous (again spelling deeply in question).

Bear in mind I am a furious chef who takes no edible prisoners (apart from an acceptable apitizer). All perish before my knives and mad skills. Really, I am good!

Jeebus!!! What brought this on?

Must be the need for some Spyderco culinary magic.

Truth is I use my Spydies day in and day out but I cook much more than any other use now <sadly>.

And I want to kill that culiflower as God, (and Sal) intended.

I hope this rant :) :) :) is as well received as I intended.

Sorry if I've hijacked this thread. H'mmm food...

It is late and I am hungry.

Please forgive this transgression.

On a more on/off topic note could anyone suggest Spydies for culinary use? The Temperance is not long enough to replace my task specific tools.

I do not have (?) a local full line retailer so I am extremely limited in what I actually see in hand.

Knives and food... Life is good.

interesting, just checking on my temperance orders at Sierra and they have been shipped, and the website is now listing a few serrated and plain models left, but both almost gone.........and they raised the sale price from $39 to $49. They must have found a few serrated ones or maybe some were returned.
