Spyderco Whale Rescue Blade

#1

Post by TazKristi »

I know some of you like to hear some of the interesting things that happen here and this story seems quite appropriate to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy!

Several months ago, the Department of Conservation and Land Management - Western Australia, contacted me. They have a team that specializes in rescuing entangled large whales. They designed a blade that met their needs but they needed it to be even better. They needed a SpyderEdge. Steel wasn't a concern for them, just the edge.

We recently provided them with their SpyderEdge Whale Rescue Blade prototype and in the past 4 weeks they've been able to save 3 entangled whales. This blade was serrated by hand and I think you'll agree, it's amazing work.

I've attached a few pictures for you all to see the blade, both dry and at work.

That's neat!

I think if I were approaching a cranky trapped whale with a blade I'd want my insurance paid up...

That's amazing Kristi! It's nice to hear about an American company stepping up to the plate on conservation and the environment!

Now all we need to do is put G-10 handles on that baby, and "you too can own your very own Whale Rescue Blade!!" I'm not quite sure though that people wouldn't call SWAT on me when using it to open mail in the office!!!

No, since it was made here, H1 wasn't an option. Sal chose 440C.

Good guess though, that was our initial reaction too! :D

That's an awesome story, and great pictures of the knife AND the action shots! What a treat to see! I love to hear stories that show mankind's better side with nature, especially where animals are concerned. Those folks in Australia sure went to the right people for help with the tool they needed, and kudos to them for doing a tough job!

GREAT job with the knife, Spyderco!! This is a perfect example of one of the reasons why you guys are The Best at what you do.

Thanks, Kristi for sharing that news with us- you should publicize these things over the AP! :) Heck- who needs the AP when we've got the Forum?

Serrated by hand? That is amazing. How long is that thing, 6-7 inches? And 440c to boot. Just goes to show what an amazing company can do when given a unique proposition. Did they go to any other companies, or was it :spyder: all the way?
Ask me where I got my awesome SUPERHAWK!

More like Mid-Cal now

Will the production model be lockback or compression lock? :D

Ooooo...oooo...blue G-10 again please.

Will it have a low-profile clip option?

Good stuff though!

The blade is actually 340mm long, nearly 13.5". And yes, by hand. :D
