Just ordered a Swick, any impressions?

#1

Post by Havatoo »

Hi, wanted to ask impressions of anyone who had one of these? It's only my 3rd Spyderco (not counting Byrds).
Is this a sprint run or a regular production item? And does it come with a chain or lanyard? A few places I used to see that carried it don't have it anymore so I wanted to grab one before they were unavailable. Thanks in advance for any replies.

The current SWICK kinda toes the line between Sprint Run and normal production. The current version was intended as a test run to gauge ELU reaction to the design, and to determine if there was sufficient interest to go through with full production.

We haven't heard much about it, except from a few vocal forumites who are big fans of the SWICK(guilty as charged :o )I believe once it makes production, it is intended to be H-1, instead of S30V.

Only 500 were made, so if you want to get one, now's the time. Only two dealers I use still have them in stock, and I'd like to pick another one up in case they never make it to production.

Here's a review I did a while back, in case you want to read it.
http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... ICK+review

It comes with only the sheath. No chain or Tek-Lok, but both work equally well, and can be purchased separately for little money.

Here is my little Swick. [we just have to have more pics!]

While I am somewhat new to the neck type of knife set up - this one works for me. I do need to get the para-cord set up better but it does feel better with it on.

I did not know that this was a smaller run - I thought it was a full production. Cool - although now I am somewhat torn between hoping it does well and hoping that it does not....

I have nothing to add as Scott covered all the bases, but neither of us can help but post in a Swick thread. We both love it!

Eh don't worry about it...if they go for H1 in full production (as they said they would plan too) your "investment" will be safe. ;)

Exactly. The production run will be H-1, so these S30V models will be collectible.

D'OH!

I went and used my future Ebay Goldmine :o

Oh well ;)

Anytime there is a SWICK thread, you can bet Zen and I will be on it quickly :p

Hey Havatoo, I think you'll like the Swick.....I've found it to be a more versatile cutter than my Micarta SPOT and I like the overall ergos of the Swick more than my SPOT...oh yeah and it's hard to argue with the stonewashed flat ground s30v steel......I believe New Graham Knives has them back in stock and Knifeworks.com is where I initially bought mine! ;)

I just got my swick from NG today. I really like the finger hole and grip on this knife. I've just gotta get a chain or tek-lok for it.

I've had my swick for one week now, and have really grown to like it. The ergonomics are amazing for a steel handle with no padding of any kind. This knife fits my hand. Unfortunately, Sal's post over on bladeforums implies that the market isn't responding to this one, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showp ... ostcount=6 just goes to show that what us knife nuts go for may not be what the general public goes for. Guess I'd better pick up a second in case they never make it into large scale production, because the one I have is definitely a user.

Dare I say it? I think part of the problem with the lukewarm Swick sales could be due (in part) to pricing. Think about it. The Micarta SPOT features VG-10 bladesteel, fancy micarta scales, and a paracord shell covered necklace. This knife is still commonly available and it sells for a few dollars less than the Swick.

I can't speak for everyone but I know that's why I haven't ordered one. I wear my VG-10 SPOT everywhere but the shower and I was jazzed to hear that Spyderco was planning a warncliff version. When I seen the rather bare-bones Swick (and the price tag) I took a pass. It's possible I'll snag one in the future but it's way down on the list for now. And this is coming from a Spyderco enthusiast. No wonder John Q. Public passed on the model.

people really missed the boat on this one...it doesn't have to be a neck knife either...a small fixed blade with awesome ergos! How can you go wrong.

I agree totally. I have no fixed blades at all besides the swick, and only ordered a swick after reading the accolades here on this forum, and it was an add-on to an order I was making anyway. Add in the fact that with no tec-lok or neck chain it pretty much comes unusable without another order, and I think you hit on a big reason for less than stellar sales.

You might be right 4077 regarding the price point...but I will say this: if you wear the Spot daily, you would really appreciate the Swick. It is head and shoulders about any Spot.

It works exceptionally well as a fixed blade.

I've been using mine as a boxcutter recently. Heck the whole sheath can just be dropped in your pocket if you want to.

I really need to snag another SWICK.

Gosh the only two folks I can think of who ever talk about it are Scott and myself... :p Hey Scott we helped make a sale!

One thought on the lackluster feedback may be that the Collector Club versions haven't or are just barely arriving to Collectors. I'm sure that adds to the deafening silence. Not many knife knuts are going to run out and purchase a "free range" Swick if they already have one coming in the Collector Club. If the Collector versions take months to be delivered after the original release of the knife....well it can only harm sails IMO. :(

Well, the Swick just arrived from NGK today, I can't post pictures because I don't know how to with my (gift) camera. Or how to hook it up.
The Swick is great. It feels better in the hand than my La Griffe. Will need to get a paracord. It feels very sturdy in the hand.
I can't read Bladeforums, they want you to "register". What did Sal say about the Swick? Is Spyderco not planning to make it a production run? Because sales are slow? It's a nice knife. Well, if it doesn't go into production that'll make them all the rarer.
Since this is carried next to the body what do you folks recommend as a rust preventative? Something which won't stain clothing?

Hey -- watch what you say about SWICK's dad, SPOT! I happen to love my SPOT (though it's currently in Golden, CO getting it's rivet fixed :( ). I like the fact that it's smaller than the SWICK. Admittedly I have not handled a SWICK, but I'll say it again: I do love my SPOT! :D

Registering: Go ahead and register it is no big deal and totally worth the info gained.
Swick: You nailed it. ;)
