Spydies with 2 1/2" Blade or Less for Fed Bldg Carry?

#1

Post by Pseudo-Fed »

I work in a federal building where I'm limited to 2.5", and currently carry a cricket. What are some of the favorite alternatives that meet my blade size limitation?

Oooh, I feel an order coming on!

(Thanks)

You need a Dodo.

Small blade (2" through some "creative" measuring, shorter officially) and a big comfy handle. They're on sale through Spyderco right now, and discontinued, I highly recommend one

I would have to go with any variation of the Kopa. Very small, light, beautiful and a big cutter.

I also second Scott's suggestion of the Dodo.

Aloha and welcome Pseudo-Fed,

I will highly second the advice of my KnifeBrother...I simply love these long handle/short blade types of knives. The Dodo is an indredible knife, light, strong, and if you already carry a Cricket then the blade style should be something you are familiar with.

Second choice would be the SS Dragonfly for sure. ;)

God bless and enjoy your stay

The Kopa and the Kiwi are also excellent choices. In addition to meeting the size requirement, they also tend to raise fewer eyebrows when used around the office than most Spydercos.

This is true...I just figured Bostonian was a clip carry guy, so I left out the lil' Kiwi. :D Say...what about the SS NavII? Forgot about that one! :o

As said above, the Kopa is my favorite, and the Dragonfly as #2.

Since I got one a couple of months ago, I have to say Kiwi. It may be very small but it's the cuttingest little thing I ever did see. For the uses I put knives to, I find it more versitile than the Cricket (still like my Cricket though). And finally, if you want to wait a while and it strikes your fancy, don't forget they're rereleasing the Copilot on sprint run.

Let us not forget the Poliwog and the Navigator. Also, if you can find one, the old Q designs are about 1mm shy of 2 1/2".

Dodo all the way! It's a great very strong blade, a very comfortable handle and has a nice little tail to use as an attitude adjustment tool.

I would get a Dodo anyway, they are discontinued (sadly) but thay have been a favourite of many :spyder: afficionados that realise it's potential.

I think almost all was mentioned now: Kopa, Kiwi, Dragonfly, Navigator, Cricket, Dodo and you can add some Ladybug or Jester as well. Meerkat too (normal or reverse S)
If you are thinking in SD too, then I would go either with the Dodo, Cricket SS or Dragonfly.

(There is also a good choice for a non :spyder: knife, but more for the OT section. Ok, I will give you a hint ;) SubCom )

I second the copilot.
the jester.
the pride. I love this little knife. next to the copilot, this is my favorite small spyderco. And it has the added benefit of being a slipjoint.

A sprint of copilots! I like to hear that! :)

Psuedo-Fed,
Another small one would be the alimite Walker. Seem to be plenty around. One that would be nice but hard to get is the DKPK. Also a slipjoint to be less offensive to NKP.

I am pretty sure that the salsa has a 2.5" blade and I know that the Byrd Robin is of an acceptable length as well. All of the other knives I can think of that meet your requirements have already been mentioned.

You didn't say you were limited to folders so I'm going to suggest a SPOT or a Swick. Neck carry makes them fairly invisible and depending on where and how you carry them they can be brought into play faster than a knife you have to open. I think fixed blades of 2.5 inches are OK on federal property,(but please check it out first), I used to hear of people who worked at the VA hospital carrying Urban Pals for that same reason.

I like the looks of the Spur, Navigator and the Dragonfly so far. Please keep telling me your favorites! Primary uses will be letter opening, occasional cardboard boxes, sometimes package opening. I'm in an office environment, so probably light use. Would like best edge retention since I'm bad at sharpening and don't make it to my local knife shop too often.
