Multitools...

#1

Post by smcfalls13 »

Does anyone use the knives that come with most multitools?

Just something the Spyderench thread had me thinking about. On most tools, it seems to be a waste of space, for several reasons. One is because the knife would not typically be comfortable to use due to all the attachments on the handle. Also it warrants mentioning that except for a few exceptions, the knives featured on multitools are often subpar blades using who knows what steel that barely holds an edge.

Before I traded my Leatherman, I noticed that I never used the knife at all. In fact the only tools I actually used were the screwdrivers, the file, and the can/bottle opener.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to see a multitool that features more tools, and less knives. If I want a knife, I'll carry one, not use the one given to me.

Just a random thought I threw out here for you guys to chew on. :o

I have used the knife on my Leatherman Juice - but only to open mail or small parcels and Christmas gifts.

For any serious cutting, or greater quantity of cutting, I'd choose something more appropriate.

I have used the knife on my Swiss Tool and I have used the knife on my Spyderench. But I usually try to use the good ol Dyad. A knife which is kind of a multi tool in and of itself. :spyder:

There's a Knife Blade in there? .................................Oh Yeah the Knife Blade   Just kidding :D I use the blade in my LM Wave very little, only if I remember it's there. It is much easier and quicker to whip out the Adventura and put it to use. But, it does make me think how little that blade is actually used. I just looked at my Wave, that poor thing is so beat-up, except the knife blade.........it still looks new. :p :D Take Care All.

God Bless :)

I have at times forgotten my clip-it. God forbid. It is handy to have backup even if it is a crappy little Micra blade.

That said, LM or someone probably could market a bladeless multitool, but it would have to be a high-end model probably.

I used to use the blade on my plain old Gerber multi, because it had a partially plain edge and all the :spyder: 's I carried were SE. Now I use my PE Native and never use the MT blade.
I use the pliers a -lot-.

the blade on my crunch has little left fo an "edge"... never had much of one when I got it, and after being abused at work like it was it's in need of serious work(as in I could probably take it to the grinder for a minuter to restore an edge, otherwise I'm looking at an hour freehand). still cuts better than 90% of the knives most folks carry :p

The one on my juice is shaving sharp, it's my sheeple blade. Still has the needle sharp tip on it, thats how little it gets used... but at least I'm not digging my spydie out to open a bag of chips because it's the only crazy sharp knife on me.

Personally, I'd be happy with scissors, file, screwdrivers(small & med of both phillips and flat), and the vnox tweezers & toothpick. 95% of the time those are all I use on my multitools. The vnox blades barely even get used, think the most common use for the small one is to clean my nails.

If I had a multi-tool, I probably wouldn't use the blade as much as my regular EDC, though it seems I always need a screwdriver at the most inconvienient time. At least when Spyderco comes out with it's new one, we can be confident that the blade will stand up to the test.

chomp...chomp...chew...*gulp*.

Okay, was taught never to talk with my mouth full. :p

Strange...if anything I rarely use the knifeblade on my MT's now that you mention it. Mostly I have used the awl, screwdrivers and of course the plier.

I use the knife on my Charge Ti, but then again that's not a normal multi-tool knife.

The knives on my Leatherman PST & Wave are fine for light duty cutting and I've used them. The knife on my Spydiewrench was fine too. For serious cutting, I'd rather have a better knife, but any of these will work in a pinch.

At work, I carry a LM Pulse and for light duty cuts, I'll use the blade. I will also use it for messier jobs as well, because I don't care if it gets messed up.But more times than not, I'll go for my knife out of habit.

I never used the knife on the my Leatherman Fuse. Also, I stopped carrying it shorty after I got it, as I rarely used anything besides the screwdrivers- I DO keep it in my car so its nearby if I need the tools while I'm out of the house.

I would love to see a beefy handled spyderco with a phillips and flat screwdriver in addition to a quality blade (I'm thinking something the size of the D'allara with screwdriver shafts that slide out of the handle). Just don't use the drivers while the knife is open, then you might have other problems!

my multitool is a swisstool, its saved my bacon a couple of times in the many years I have carried it. the knife on it hasnt been used very much, but it has a couple of times. its more like insurance to me, its there if ya need, but if not then its not really taking up much room.

Agreed,
the way i see it, i am always carrying a better knife w/ my multitool so the knife on it is just a fall back option. I have learned from my mistakes in choosing multitools though and this time will be buying a leatherman. My sog has let me down, and for the price i paid thats not excepable.

My SOG Powerlock is the toughest I have found. I like it over Leatherman, anything Gerber, V-nox, and any and all cheapies.

The only time I've ever used the knife on my multitools when I had to strip a 4 gauge wire for a stereo system I was installing in a friend's car, because my wire strippers at the time only went down to 10 gauge. Other then that one time the blade on my multitools never been used.

I use the micro blade of my LM squirt only when I have something to scratch.

All the rest of the cutting is done with either my SAK(messy jobs) or my :spyder:
