Post by SSB »

I'd like to get a black ATR & a black bladed military, but have had black bladed knives in the past that chipped & peeled with use.
Are these going to be the same?
Should i just get the uncoated versions?
Anybody have any info on this ?
I'd prefer black blades in these 2 knives but not if hey don't stay that way.
please advise,regards,Rick. :spyder:

Rick,

I've got a number of the Spydie black blades (both old and new). My experience is that they do not chip or peel, but will scratch with use (as you'd likely expect). IMHO, If it's a user, the scratches give it character .. :spyder:

I agree with Stevieray....i've got a black Paramilitary that gets light scratches only...the finish seems quite durable!

Spyderco uses a DLC coating which is insanly duarable. It wont mess up, unless you are rubbing it on stones and concrete.

Spyderco uses the beast coatings availible on the market, much better than other companys like BM, which comes off as if they are soft and still wet/

I'm using two black blades right now, a Military and a Crow. Have no clue if the coatings the same but they scuff with use but no sign of the coating coming off. That's with normal use. (I'm not cutting soda cans in half Chad. lol)
Like Vincent said, some other brands I've had come off quite easy, like the color is "painted" on.

Actually the scuffs are probably from deposited material (the coating scratching the other material) and not from material removed (scratches IN the coating). DLC is HARD. My worry would be that it might peel off the material underneath, but sofar I haven't heard anybody complaining about that. But it will be hard to scratch. Having said that, I don't like coatings...very sheeple unfriendly.

In BM's defense. BM uses or at least used to use two different types of coatings. A teflon based coating mostly found on their "not-so-stainless" blades and a coating that I believe was based on a TiN coating....MUCH harder.

HoB is right on I believe. I have a military that I've used extensively. There have been times when I thought I scratched the coating but WD-40 takes them off...

The stuff Spyderco uses is very tough. If you want a black blade I think it will stand up under use and serve you well.

Note to add: I didn't realize that the coating of the Military and that of the ATR are actually different. But the ATR is a Carbo-Nitrite coating. Should still be very hard.

The coatings Spyderco uses are very hard.

One warning - keep them away from sand; it will scratch.

How about pics? I want to see, how a DLC coated blade looks with use.
