My pilgrimage to Golden!

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

I finally got to have my vacation/honeymoon these past two weeks, and a visit to Golden was in the itinerary. Hey, my wife suggested we’d go there so who am I to object? ;)

The trip was great, largely thanks to pre-planning tips from Joyce. If you didn’t want to visit the Spyderco facilities, I still suggest you visit Golden and its surroundings. It’s a stunning piece of America to visit, drive or hike through. But…you may be more interested in my time with the spyder-family.

One word: awesome. Joyce was our personal guide for the entire day, and Olive was with us for a good part of the day as well. Everyone we met was so kind and generous with their time. I got to see the CATRA machine and how it worked, ‘we’ broke some knives in another machine. Apparently this (large and heavy) ‘lock-breaking machine’ actually jumps a bit off the floor in order to defeat a Chinook II!

I saw lots of prototypes. A couple of familiar designs, which were in a further stage of development. Like some Kopa suggestions, the Li’l Temp II and a -very- exciting Ed Schempp folder design I sincerely hope will see production. If we can get a steady supply of properly produced titanium parts into the production pipeline, it will be a very good year for the spyderholics! And I’m not just talking about the ATR here guys. And there were some new knives, like the knife Spyderco is developing with the 82nd airborne.

Which did I like best? I think Olive said it best to my wife after seeing me continuously fiddling with one particular knife: “Guess what he wants for Christmas?!”. That knife was the Ocelot. I also completely fell in love with the new Delica. The new trainer model just sticks to my hand like glue, even through all sorts of manipulations. It feels more solid and ergonomic than the current/previous Delica. Of course the mini Manix will be a winner, just like the Kumo.

The outlet store made me the proverbial kid in the candy-store. And I seemed to just keep coming back there the entire week. ;) There was a small display of letters and memorabilia the troops in the various ‘sandboxes’, to show their appreciation of the special Natives they received.

The coolest stuff perhaps was the unexpected, like the first proof of the new brochure for 2006 I got a peek at. Suffice to say that not only is there a new Schempp design in the pipeline, but also some cool refinements on current models. I will leave the scoops to Kristi and Joyce to make public.

Then there was the time we were talking with Sal about Keating and Bagwell bowies, and before I knew it Sal came back with two genuine Bagwell bowies. Let me tell you: It certainly doesn’t ‘suck’ to handle a real Bagwell Bowie and have Sal Glesser show you how to perform the back-cut, smack in the middle of the ‘Al Mar Conference Room’ at Spyderco HQ, right next to a table filled with the newest protos. You can read about how ‘alive’ a Bagwell bowie can be, but it is something else to experience it first hand!

These are just a couple of the highlights. Again, much thanks to Joyce, Sal and everyone else for their warm welcome, time, and suggestions on what sights to see and explore in the Golden area. I was spoiled rotten, as my wife likes to say, with all the goodies we received and the time that we got to spend with everyone. We would definitely like to come back sometime. And not for the knives you know, but to be able to spend more time with the spydercrew and to enjoy that wonderful landscape.

More to come later … must now … succumb to jetlag!

That's it Wouter? One little pic of the outside of the building. Thanks for sharing, I guess. :D

All kidding aside, glad you enjoyed your visit to the USA. And it definitely sounds like there's some interesting stuff in the pipeline.

On just about every wall in the Spydercomplex you can find a multitude of placques for patents, awards and 'thank you's'. One of those in particulare caught my eye. Apparently, the men from Seal Team 5 prefer SE over PE :D .

now just think... if I had been able to send you coffee before you went on vacation, you would be wired enough now to stay up and fight jetlag by kicking it's *ss :p

****, maybe if I mentioned I was a forum member I would have gotten the personal tour?

What did you do to get the tour? Just ask? Or did you have to make reservations?

Can't seem to get much sleep so... ;)

Spyderco does not offer a factory tour. Me and the Mrs. did not get a tour of the production plant. I tried to but no, the liability issues are just too complicated.

I planned this visit a long time ago, and I did meet some if not most of the Spydercrew before on a couple of occasions. I was at that most intimate of knife shows, the Amsterdam preview show for the past two years. There I first met Sal, Joyce and Olive to name a few.

I got into contact again with Joyce for the engraving of my K04 wedding cake knife (which the caterer was reluctant to give back I've been told!). So you see, one thing led to another and a careful friendship was already building before my visit. I wanted to drop by the office to say thank you and perhaps talk some more about knives. We stayed in the outlet store and office area only. The protos I saw were the same you would see at a knife show, and I saw most of them at the A'dam preview shows.

So it was a special visit, definitely not a 'regularly scheduled tour'. Sal was pretty busy that day, I didn't meet with him untill the end of the day. Besides, I came all the way from the Netherlands and it was my honeymoon. I can assure you that the few photos I had on hand of my wedding, from then only three days earlier, were well received. ;)

I do believe that what Spyderco really wants to do is start up a little museum, to not only edg-u-cate the public about the history of the knife, but also to cater better to the fans out there. But at this time it is a plan only. The spyder-family isn't that big, like Kristi posted, about 34 people total. So it could take a while before the capacity is there to realise this idea.
