Dude,
Check out Spyderco's Endura and Delica <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> They are best-sellers and had been highly regarded by end-line users. Used knives depreciate in value so, if you are hard-pressed to find one for everyday carry.. The reputed models would be the ones to go for. Some forumites love the Native and Calypso Jr ltwt.. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> These models are also very popular. Now, for prices, you can get it at a good rate from on-line stores inclusive of shipping charges. Just move your mouse and do some exploring for the best prices... <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Hi Merlin,

The plain-edge Chinese folder is a great knife -- it's as good as production knives get. I have one in my pocket as I type this.

The green colour is standard.

My first Spyderco was a 50/50 old style (plastic clip) Endura. Now I own several versions and love them. I would recomend the new Endura (2001) in 50/50.
A good place to look is EBAY especially for the NIB older models still floating aound.
If the Endura is too big try the Delica or the Native. Yo can't go wrong with a Spydie especially thoose models listed.

I am lucky enough to have a very good dealer within a few miles of home. He carries the full Spyderco line and has very competitive prices. I know he does the majority of his business via mailorder. I don't think he has his web site up and running yet but here is his info:

Grand Prairie Knives
2230 Liebler Road
Troy IL 62294
(618) 667-2323

My humble collection so far only has 3 models that I have bought from this dealer:

Police SS - ATS55
Q
Spydercard - plain edge

I bought the Spydercard yesterday for $26

Compared that price with Knifecenter.com - $29.95

I hope this helps.

Merlin2111 -- IMO, you would do well to buy a decent knife, but not too expensive a model for your first.

It makes it difficult to recommend a model, when you've not stated the basic uses/purposes for the knife you're buying. So, kind of stabbing in the dark, so to speak.

I would recommend you give real consideration to the Native, w/FRN handle and CPM440V steel. The Native is a mid-sized knife, and one of the most flexible knives I've used. It has very good steel, and the clip can be easily moved from one side to the other, making it completely ambidextrous.

It is't so large it is likely to scare people, but, with a blade a tad over 3" it can serve well in a defensive role, should that ever prove necessary. It has a choil fairly far forward, making precise cutting easy. It has a very good point, for piercing/thrusting. It's blade is more tapered than most of my other Spydercos.

If you want a larger knife, I'd recommend the Wegner model. Despite being promoted primarily as a hunting knife, it is a very effective tactical folder as well.

I don't have any of the smaller Spydercos yet. The Mouse is expensive, but great. I think the Dragonfly is also a very good knife. Somewhat similar to the Native in size is the Calypso Jr. The FRN model with G-10 steel is regarded by many as the best manufactured cutting knife there is.

There are a slough of web dealers. My favorite, though they don't have the widest inventory, is Bayou LaFourche:
http://64.49.193.154/store.asp

Usually at or near the bottom price-wise, with excellent service. They ship UPS, so that isn't the quickest around. But, it is the more certain method, compared to the USPS.

I like Knife Outlet also:
http://www.knifeoutlet.com/spyderco.htm

I also like Skylands:
http://www.skylandscutlery.com/

There are a couple others I could name who are likely to have a bit lower prices. One in particular has great prices, and if everyting goes okay with an order -- read he has hte knife in stock -- things usually go well. But, if things go awry in any way, they get badly fouled up. Another gets a large # of complaints on the other forum.

Last, didn't look him up, is shootist16, Dennis Bible. He sells knives, often at excellent prices. You should be able to find him with a search here.

Good luck!

If you have inquired about joining Spyderco's Collectors Club and were disappointed to learn that back issues are not available - now's your chance.

For sale is my collection of 32 Spyderco Collectors knives, all engraved with collector number 177 PLUS an autographed copy of "The Spyderco Story" and the club issued Triangle Sharpmaker. As a bonus the unusual Jot Singh Khalsa is included (not a club issue) for a total of 33 knives.

I've been buying the knives thru a dealer in another state so not only do I get a discount, I don't have to pay sales tax.

Drop me a line if interested. I can email you with an Excel spread sheet with the details. Thanks!
