Rare blade-steel question...

#1

Post by Episteme »

Hi. A quick question. I just dug up an old knife that I found in one of my drawers, and it is a CRKT M16 model with a Carbon Fiber handle. Apparently, the steel on the blade is either ACUTO 440, or AUS 118. Has anyone heard of any one of these particular steels? If so, are they good steels insofar as edge-holding, hardness, and so forth? (A comparison to spyderco steels would help even more. ie: how do theycompare to AUS 8, VG-10, etc.)
Thanks,
Mike

Not to familiar with them but if it is on a CRKT it is probably not that great of a steel.

Aus-118

I have indeed heard of AUS-118. But as far as I know CRKT is the only commercial knife company that uses that particular blade steel.

By the way is it hard to sharpen like it's brother AUS-10?

Now AUS-10 I have always said was a nice hidden treasure of sorts.

JD Spydo;
I have not even used this knife to cut anything; it still has the factory edge on it (notwithstanding any micro-corrosion that might have slightly dulled away the edge over time while the knife was sitting in my drawer for a few years). So, I cannot attest to how difficult the steel is to sharpen.
I think that CRKT makes some decent models; unfortunately it is hit-or-miss sometimes. The only series of knives made by CRKT that I really take seriously (and like as much as some of my spydercos) are Kit Carson's M16 versions. But that is for another Thread.
