Question about G-10 scales...

#1

Post by Episteme »

I have decided to ask this question on the Off-Topic forums because I have just purchased a new knife, but regrettfully, it is not a spydie. The knife has red G-10 handles, and this is the first G-10 knife I have purchased thus far. My question is an odd one, in that I notice that the G-10 scales have a peculiar odor. Has anyone noticed this on spydercos that have G-10 scales? My FRN spydies do not smell at all.

I have never had an odor at all with any Spyderco or Benchmade I have owned with G-10 scales.

What does it smell like?

Thanks for the replies. On closer inspection, the odor from this knife might actually be from the pivot lubricant used by the manufacturer of the knife. I'm still not sure yet; I suppose time will tell as the lubricant slowly wears away. If the odor persists, then it still could be the G-10. By the way, the knife I'm referring to is the nicest non-spyderco I've ever owned; a CRKT Kit Carson M16 with red G-10 scales and a 3-inch teflon coated tanto blade.
It is not as efficient of a cutting tool as my Pro-grip, Caly Jr., or Police model, but the 'coolness' factor of the 'Carson-Flipper' and the red G-10 scales caught my eye for a 'spur of the moment' purchase.

Hello mike,

Are you sure it's the M-16? It sounds more like the M-18, which was discontinued. They are similar to the M-16, only a different shaped handle with G-10 inlays, and a recurve blade (which made it's way onto the M-21). BTW, I don't think it's a titanium coating, just titanium grey colored.

I own one myself for about a year now, so I am pretty sure I am right about the model number. Congrats on the aquisition. I agree about them being a very nice knife. one of the few CRKT with AUS-8. Mine saw more pocket time than others untill I discovered VG-10. I don't recall the "smell" you refer to but, I applied some White Lightning to the pivot as soon as I got it, so the only thing I smell is the WL.

These knives came in blue, red, green, black, and I think, MAYBE grey (but I'm not positive). They also came in a larger version, and were the first to put the recurve, spear point on the M series of knives. They lacked sales because people prefered the handle of the M-16. As a result, CRKT discontinued the M-18, and then came out with the M-21 (which has the recurve with the original handle).
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Thanks,
My mistake. I had forgotten about those, and always thought they had black blades. Never read the descript. Those are cool.

Heres the one I was thinking of.
