Got a DVD from JD Spydo a little bit ago, finally tried sharpening a different way... lets just say my millie shaves again :D
Japanese style sharpening, more polishing than anything. No "quick" touchups.
Did my old 110, gave it to my sister for camping(dunno how it held up yet), Did my military... HOT **** that's sharp. 2 days of work, still shaves. THIN and polished quite nicely.
I'd imagine that this method would work great on a knife like the calypso jr with thin flatground vg-10. Makes my millie sing. Might have to do my 'fly like this now. :D :D  :D

sharpening, new method
Coffee before Conciousness
Why do people worry more if you argue with your voices than if you just talk with them? What about if you lose those arguements?
Slowly going crazy at work... they found a way to make the voices work too.

Sharp knives are good knives. :D

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Chad, define "one piece"...
Physically: Wrist is stiff as ****, ***** of a headache, and nausious
Mentally: I've got the mental capacity of a grain of rice
Sanity: I'm gonna crack one of these days...
doesn't help that it's been 30deg for the last week, dealing with heatstroke today(had to be 50 in the shop yesterday and I only got down 3 litres in 8hrs). only got through an hour of work and I'm home already.
Jimmy: took me about an hour to create the edge, shouldn't take 5min to touchup if I just need to use the whites. Compared to 4-5 strokes on the stone for a normal edge.
Ghostrider: The Chef's Edge: Traditional hand-sharpening techniques for Janapese Western-style and Yanagi knives
The basics:
*hold your knife at 5 oclock to the stone, edge away
*lay your bevel on the stone(yes, the entire edge bevel)
*lay 2-3 fingers over your edge(pressing the knife into the stone) starting about a 1/2" in from the tip
*push the knife along the stone, pull back, keeping pressure on it the whole way
*move over a finger width, repeat till you get to the heel.
*have a burr yet? if not, repeat
*flip the knife over so the edge is towards you
*repeat until you have a burr on this side
*keep going into higher grit stones till it's polished to your level
*watch the burr* If you want to make it more defined before flipping, remember that your fingers will be resting pretty much ON the burr. lift your fingers to move them over or you can cut yourself on the burr.
Japanese style knives use a different edge that we are used to... 2 pennies on one side, 3 on the other... rather than equal angles. Doesn't mean you can't use this method on a knife with a "standard" edge on it though.

A Big 10-4
Vamp I told you that you would like that DVD on Japanese type sharpening  didn't I? Well that just goes to show that there is not only more than one way to skin a cat>> there is even another methodology on putting a razor edge on some of our finest cutlery.
I was very careful as to who I released this info to first. I knew in my gut that Vampyrewolf would come through for me (even though he doesn't like Dark Shadows :D ) ( just love that Angelique  ). But the man is a craftsman is his own rite and we can learn from him!! :spyder:
I think that Vamp has actually forgotten more about sharpening than I have learned in the last 4 years and he has been a friend indeed. You can get this DVD through the Korin Trading Company. They also have some awesome Japanese culinary type knives along with a lot of other fine accessories. You heard from me>>> Good Ol' JD  Spydo that is!!!!

Okay, good...you're your normal self still. :p Bro, if your mental capacity is that of a grain of rice, mine must be the size of termite crap! Seriously, though, situation "normal" still, huh?vampyrewolf wrote:Chad, define "one piece"...

Interesting notes on the sharpening. Hear ya on the "uneven bevels" of Japan. Take a look at Nealy's knives...
God bless you Bro, and DO take care
