FRN Pro-Grip VS Calypso Jr.

#1

Post by Outlaw »

A few months back I got a Gray Calypso Jr. I immediately fell in love this knife & it's been my work/office knife until today. It's been replaced by my newly acquired FRN Pro-Grip, with a VG-10 combo blade.

The handles on the 2 are very similar. The steel is the same (VG-10) but the Pro-Grip has a stronger blade. So......
Why is the Calypso so popular & the Pro-Grip.... well not so much?

Don't know why. I have a Micarta Calypso. I like it, but I do like the Pro-Grip better. But then again I really like the Spur which is kinda like a smaller Pro-Grip. Usually the Calypso and Delica are mentioned in comparison. In which case I like the Delica better.

But. all that said, I do like the Calypso, just not as much as a lot of others.

The Calypso JR is more of a "finnesse" knife than most Spydies which are famouse for their "robust" blades. I love my Micarta version. It can handl anything short of cutting hemp ship riggings. As an office knife, it has no equal. :)

Well, I can see a lot of great features at the Pro Grip, but it just can't grow on me, because of that drop point blade and peculiar hump. I much more preffer the "K" model, which is basically a Pro Grip with a Delica blade:

I have both, the Caly Jr. and also the Pro Grip, so easy decission.
Caly Jr. - better allround cutting tool, dedicated pocket slicer, scalpel.
Pro Grip - perfect gripping, ideal for rough cuttin, without sheeple factor IMO.
Got the version in G2 steel.

I prefer the C52 more, cause of lefthanded usage and plain edge.
I think both are great.

yea -- i've only owned it for a few days, but the calypso jr. has already proven itself worthy of all lightsaber comments it's received...

One thing to remember is that the "general public" favor the Pro-Grip, it is only the "cognocenti" who prefer the Caly Jr.. For me, being left handed, it's a fairly simple choice, as the Pro-Grip is one of the most "violently" right handed models left in the lineup. But even without that, I'd favor the Caly Jr as I find a full flat grind works better for me when peeling and slicing fruit and sharpening pencils, and no worse for any of the other things I routinely use a knife for.

The clip on the Pro-grip is its big downfall IMO.

I don't mind that its FRN so much as the Kraton that they put underneath the clip. I've never liked that about the Pro grip and I don't think I'm alone on this.

The Calypso jr. on the other hand is just pure excellence.
