Here's a quote from "The Spyderco Story":
"The name Spyderco and the mascot spider that became embodied in the company's logo were derived from the word "spyder", which represents two things: the spiderlike shape of the Portable Hand (Sal's first invention) and the designation some European automakers gave to high-performance roadsters.
High performance, then and now, was what Sal wanted to provide in whatever products he sold."
Can't help with the second part of the question though <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow, in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Mundele,
I can't post the picture, but here's another quote from "The Spyderco Story":
"Spyderco began in Redding, California, in 1976, its owners having recently launched a project aimed at learning how to take a product from it's inception and concept through obtaining a patent and marketing the item. Instead of a knife, that product was a Portable Hand-a device with multiple legs and clips that could be fastened to a fixed surface and would hold one or more objects in a stable position. The first market for the Portable Hand was the circuit-board assembly industry, but people bought it for a wide range of uses in industry and the home. During the five-year life span of the Portable Hand, Sal invented the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker and the first Clipit knife."
