how many of us carry a HEAVY folder daily?
I am looking at the fantastic pictures of the chinook and manix right now, and I have to say that they radiate some serious eyeball-magnetic field and I feel my wallet crying.
But one thing drags me from placing orders on ebay for a good plain edge manix, that is the easy-to-carry issue. About a year ago I had an Al-Mar SERE2000 for a few months and I seldom carried this knife. Its weight was one of the reasons bothered me. The chinook and manix are both pretty heavy too. For those who EDC these knives, have weight been an issue that bothers you?

The weight
For me, I carry something in the 2oz field - I like something
that doesn't show a weight "bulge", is slim profile, small & :spyder:
sharp....and that's the SE FRN Cricket ( a good SS model Cricket
is right in there too ( next one I get! ))
Have you taken a look at the Chinook II? -

I think the weight's been reduced some...

I regularly carry a very heavy folding knife in addition to my Spydies. I always have a Strider AR or GB in my pocket. They don't get much heavier than that. I don't mind the weight, and really don't notice it because I'm used to it.

The secret to caryying a heavy knife or tool is in the waist. The closer the item is to your center of gravity the better. Try it on a belt in horizontal mode, and you'll never notice it. I carry a SOG PowerLock this way (9+ oz) and forget I have it. I notice my folder in RFP all the time. I have never tried IWB carry, but it could be similar for all the clippie :spyder: s?
Unfortunately there's only so much circumference for horizontal items though...1 or 2 is okay, but you don't want to be called Batman, .. or maybe you do?

It's all a trade-off. Otherwise, I'd be better at EDC tasks with my khukuris.
There's plenty of fairly-strong stuff that weighs less if the Chinook II or Manix are too heavy for your liking. The Stretch comes to mind...

i only have carry medium and large knives.
after long time i have realized that medium knifes work the best for EDC
delica, endura, hawk - something very sharp with a slim handle.
longer, sharper, thinner and lighter is better IMO.
sometimes i carry the
civilian and the chinook2,
but - yes if it's clipped to my PJ, well.. it's kind of heavy :)
i believe that military would be the best for EDC if it would be just a little lighter.. it is an perfect design for me (size and shape)
i have a ladybug on my k.chain but since i have a larger knife on me all the time.. i doesn't really use it - it's more like a lucky charm for me.. ehh

I think the reason I was so annoyed by the weight of sere2k might be that it was summer time and it bumped back and forth in the pocket of shorts.
put aside the weight issue, how about the thickness and slickness of the folder? Whenever I pull out the sere2k from my pocket or clip it back to the pocket, I always missed my SS police.
What the heck, all these thinkings are my attempts trying to persuade myself to give up the manix and chinook to save my poor wallet.
Ironically, while thinking about those comfort issues, I placed an order on a plain edge SS police.

The Manix and Chinook II are great knives, tough as nails with excellent fit and finish. In spite of that, they are too heavy, too thick and too long for me to seriously consider carrying either one daily. The Persian is the largest :spyder: that feels comfortable sitting in my pocket, and still allow smooth draw, but once I got a Stretch the Persian started losing the daily battle for pocket space. For me, the Stretch fits more blade length and grip area into a shorter, thinner, lighter package than I thought possible for a stainless handled knife.

I carry a Chinook II almost everyday and I really don't notice it, except for when I try to reach into my pocket. My hands are waaaay to big for almost any pocket in the first place, so having a big, thick folder in there makes it impossible. Oh well, it's a worthy compromise.

That's another reason I carry'em lightweight - if one wear's light clothinglreed wrote:I think the reason I was so annoyed by the weight of sere2k might be that it was summer time and it bumped back and forth in the pocket of shorts.
in the summer you won't be able to carry an 8oz Chinook or anything in
that weight area - unless you wear a belt with your shorts & they're denim
cut offs or something.

I got my Chinook II right before going into the hospital. I was exclusively wearing PJ's and the II was clipped to the elastic waistband with no problems or drooping of said PJ's. Maybe it s just me but I have never had a problem with a large heavy folder. Too me it is worth it to have when you need it and it does not inconveniece me at all so I go for it. As I type Ihave the Chinook II and my Endura clipped to both front pockets :) Take Care and get the Chinook II or Manix!!!
