Unobtrusive Gunting Carry

#1

Post by Jim Wade »

It was a sad day when I found myself unable to log on to the ol' CSSD forum board. In contrast, I had a smile on my face all day yesterday after discovering this new forum. I was wondering where everybody went!

A tid bit of news I learned from one of the postings here on the forum is that Spyderco is selling replacement "Black" clips for the Gunting. This makes the carry a bit less obvious. After placing my order for the clip I started thinking to myself, "wouldn't it be great if the Ramp was also Black." Until a black T-coat blade is produced, I was wondering whether anyone has experimented with painting the visible part of the ramp with flat, black paint? If so, what brand/type of paint do you recommend?

Jim..welcome aboard..
no idea on painting the blade black or anything like it..
and there are black clips for the present..
BUt I find I really don't like the black clips..
I have flat battleship grey clips..
no color no reflection..they are bead blasted..
and if the choice is chrome or black.. I pick the shiny. I really personally dislike the black clips..
Oh well
It's a personal thing!!!

Bram,

I agree, sand blasted clips are the way to go. My old Centofante Jr. has a grey clip which I think is sand blasted steel and it seems to stand out less then either black or shiny clips no matter what clothing I'm wearing (no, I don't wear black pants <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>). I think the new edition of the Herbst also comes with a grey clip. I'm thinking of having it done to the clips on some of my other knives, particularly my Chinese Folder.

Clay

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow, in Australia it's tomorrow already.

I also prefer the shiny clips. I think th whole black clip thing is over rated. Black shows up even more if you are wearing light colored pants.

I know this sounds kind of strange but what about using black magic marker, or paint, on the visible part of the Ramp to tone down the metal. You could also reapply it when it wares off. It wouldn't be the same as Black-Ti coating but it might be worth a try...
What does everyone else think?

Ehh, supposed to be Thorin... : )

Well, I took the plunge. I bought flat black rustolleum paint and carefully outlined first in felt tip pen where the paint should (and should not) go. Using brushes for model painting I applied one coat (only to the clip side of the ramp). It took about 12 hours to really set up. It looks close to great (but not 10 out of 10). Now with the black clip and black ramp the Gunting is much less obtrusive.
