Spyderco Testing
Spyderco Testing
Hello all,
Being stationed over in Japan right now, I have some time on my hands, so I surf the web and I order catalogues. I ordered a Cold Steel catalogue and they sent two DVD's, More proof and Sword Proof. They were impressive but it gets tiring to watch the same tests over and over. Cutting rope, meat, etc just got boring with each knife/blade. I realized just how much I really think Spyderco is the best knife manufacturer around. Mostly due to personal opinion on Cold Steel Knives and their design.
But I was wondering, I am sure that Spyderco does some sort of stress testing on its knives, but do they show any of it like Cold Steel? I am sure someone has brought this up before, I am just curious.

Yeah I got the DVD (more proof) a while ago because I was a Cold Steel fan before Spyderco won me back. Well...fan....let's say I bough some of their products, some were good, none were that great.
I think Cold Steel do what they do because they feel they have something to prove. "We make the Sharpest, Strongest knives in the world", they said. My Strider SnG had a conversation with my Voyager the other day, guess which one is the sharper and stronger?
I would like to see a few Spyderco tortured as well though. See how much they can take. Maybe a few pictures of knives that were advises to be retired from use. I don't think it's ever going to happen because Spyderco doesn't really go into this kind of publicity and even if they did, Lynn would still find something to say their knives are better. Don't despair, just think Spyderco is so confident in the quality of their product, and customers have such faith in this company, that no one really need proofs.
Take care

Dont get me wrong...
I would like to see some of the same things as you James. BUt I guess that I will just have to settle for the unmatches performance of my Spyderco's until then.
BTW, I only buy Spyderco, I only recommend Spyderco, and when it comes to Folders, I only use Spyderco!!

Hi Garrett,
Spyderco generally scarifices one knife in every 200 to R&D testing. This ensures that our knives are meeting our inside specs.
Spyderco does contant testing on:
1. Rockwell hardness of both the blade and the lock.
2. Goniometer test on the angle of the edge grind.
3. CATRA edge test to detemine if the edge retention is consistent with data for that model.
4. Breaking of blades and locks to make sure that our minimum standards are met for lock strength.
A) light duty is 25 inch;/lbs per inch of blade.
B) Medium duty is 50 inch/lbs perinch of blade.
C) Heavy duty is 100 inch/lbs per inch of blade.
D) Very heavy duty (MBC) is 200 inch/lbs per inch of blade.
6. Q-Fog testing for corrosion resistance.
7. Constant Spine-wack testing on folders.
We have dedicated equipment for these tests.
All scientifically calculated with computers, graphs and charts.

Big COLD STEEL not bad
I will say that I used to deal in COLD STEEL but like the other comrades I was brought ultimately to :spyder: because of the overall quality. I think ( in my humble opinion) that Cold Steel is strickly a knife for hard users. I don't think any of them were ever purposed to be of a collector caliber like the ones of the Great :spyder: factory. There is one bunch of Cold Steels that I really, really like and that is their "big boys". Their Gurkha Kukris, Their Carbon V bowies & San Mai III bowies are truly the cat's meow. Why couldn't the Great :spyder: factory get into this market? Would they be cost prohibitive? I would make a way. Wouldn't a Spyder Kukri sound nice. As far as testing goes: I'll bet any of the :spyder: 's could hold up to any of the tests you see on "More Proof". JD searching for the big :spyder: :D

Big Spyders???
Say Jimmy Dean: Did you mean that you would also pay for a Spyder "Kukri" or Big Bowie if they made one? If you do then I will go as far as saying that we ought to challenge the Great :spyder: factory to reinvent the "big boys".
Could you imagine a Big Bowie with S30V? :spyder: :D

Hey JD,
I was saying I would pay for the DVD but now that you mention it, I could say that I thought your idea was very interesting. While my first impression is that Spyderco really shines in small, working folders, they did carry the Perrin knife for some time. Maybe they will come up with a big chopper or kukri. Never say never, they did come up with cool butterfly knives and the Bison will see daylight soon-ish, so if they make one of those big knives one day, you just know it's going to kick @ss!
Take care

Bison-YES!!
Yes sir I got to see the "Bison" prototype first hand at the Spirit of Steel knife show in Dallas TX last month. The Glessers ( Sal & Eric) asked me my opinion and I gave it a thumbs up all the way. I think that the Bison would be a premium working/hunting knife with a partially serrated blade. The prototype I got to try was really smooth for a big blade. I take it that you have had the privaledge also. BIG :spyder: yes!!!
I mentioned the idea of showing the design submissions for possible Spyderco production knives. These would be not just serious contenders but as many as still exist in the file cabinets somewhere in Golden.
I'm thinking a DVD would be the perfect medium for cataloging and presenting those designs of the last 20 years to Spyderco fans.
