Hi guys, within the next few weeks I hope to make my first knife purchase and from what I've been reading the Syderco selection seems to be some of the best to choose from.



The thing is I was hoping to get a plain edge Calypso Jr. Lt but unfortuantly I still haven't seen it in the UK anywhere? I was going to do one of two things:



1) Get a similarly priced and looking Spyderco knife (Feel free to make any recommendations)



2)Maybe get a Gerber AR3.00, Cold Steel Voyager Tanto or Smith & Wesson Field Lock.



I'd really appreciate any advice on what is good knife for everyday use from sharpening pencils to peeling an orange, or if there is any particualar brand I should stay clear off. Preferably I would like a small knife with a plain edge.

The only knife brands that you should stay clear of are:

Smith & Wesson
Eagle
Colt

Yeah, S&W are craaaaaaaaa.....
Bunch of idiots those guys, only good for ripping off good brands, but least you can use em for fertilizer, ok ok enough ripping off.
The Gerbers are gr8, but I prefer the Spyderco Edge, what do you want this blade for?, as a all round util blade or?

My all time fav at the mo is the Spyderco Chinook, thats a knife you can use for anything with a sharp upswept tip and boy is it solid as a rock.

Get back to us on what you want to use it for and Im sure the spydero folk here will have some good suggestions.

Thanks for the advice on the Smith & Wessons. I think what I'll do is go for something along the lines of a small pocket knife such as the Dragonfly as it's relatively cheap and it will hopefully give me an introduction to Spydercos.

One other thing though. Is the difference in the knife handles down to personal taste or are there considerable differences regarding durability etc..

I'm thinking the stainless steel handle looks really nice but would probably be more prone to scratches and blemishes over time and therefore loose it's looks slightly.

Stainless is nice, a bit heavier, and tends to "slip" a bit when your hands are cold or wet.
FRN is lightweight, durable, and you can get a good purchase under most conditions.
G10 is lightweight, allows excellent purchase in all conditions and is quite tough.
What it comes down to is personal preference, for the conditions in which it will be used.

Thanks for the advice on that guys. It's nice to have that sort of information as any ordering I do would have to be mail order only and therefore I can't handle the product before I purchase it.

Hi Qvar. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The Spyderco distributor for the UK is Edgar Bros in Macclesfield. I'm sure they can get you any Spyderco you want.
