As a primary defensive blade? Niether.
Both would be fine for back-up, but I'd choose a larger, straighter blade for a defensive knife.

If you're skilled in <i> <b>pencak silat </b> </i>
you may choose the Karambit ; if Mike Janich's <i><b>MBC </b> </i> then go for
the DoDo.
The choice is based on the fighting method ; <i><b>pencak silat </b> </i> is based
on a Far Eastern technique, whereas <i><b>MBC </b> </i> is rather broad based, and
could even embrace the Karambit.

Aloha Kali!
Out of the two you mentioned, DEFINITELY the Dodo. Much more versatile regarding SD use and everyday cutting, and has a more discreet ride. Also, the choils, something I appreciate on SD knives, are great. Dodo requires way less training when compared to such a specialized knife as the Kerambit...you can use "instinctive strikes" with greater success using the Dodo.
Dodo has enough pommel to strike with in conjunction with your slashing as well. Greater options with the Dodo, and God forbid you should ever get into such an encounter, but options are VITAL in such cases.
Choose wisely, and stay safe out there!

Hi Kali-
I wonder how scientific your poll will be!!
So with my wealth of knowledge and a spyderco catalog I would say "THE KARAMBIT".
Why? I'am glad you asked. It is at least on the list of MBC rated knives. The DoDo is not!
I guess for knife fighting or mbc use the larger blade is probably the best. But you are probably looking for something more "close in" for defensive purposes. Really any knife you have on you makes a good defensive tool. Some better than others.
You really need to handle both of these knives. I feel you would be able to manipulate the karambit better. With that big ring on the end you will be able to deploy it fast and it will lock into your hand like a claw. One bad motor scooter!
You pull a DoDo on me and I'll laugh, but pull a karambit and I might think you know what your doing.
Besides you like those hook blade knives and with a Harpy in one hand and a Karambit in the other no one will give you any "DoDo".
Now walk the streets of SD and let us know which works better!!!

Aloha Ken!
No disrespect but I have gotten along fine w/o these MBC rated knives in a SD role. I train them at full speed and full impacting slashes and strikes...sometimes absolutely nailing the dowel HARD! I have had a Gerber, and a BM close on my hand during training, and the ONLY Spyder in fact to close up on me was my SS Police...strange, but it never happened again after that. (Thank God it was PE!!) WAY before this MBC rating began, Erik REMMEN successfully held courses which emphasized the use of the Delica and Endura. Two non MBC rated knives. I think even the Sig academy promotes the use of the same Spyders to this day.
true, the Kerambit would open faster due to it's angles...but in the end,and like with most anything else, speed comes with practice.
To me, the Kerambit is too "specialized." And that ride height on her...ugh.
BTW- Mahalo for your support Ken! Also, if a "girl" pulled a Dodo on me, I'd run! (After working a few rotations at the female unit...**** they're more vicious than the guys!!!LOL!)
PS: just checked 04 catalog...Dodo is MBC rated!

Hi Kali. Sorry to dissapoint you, but for SD I'd go for the Civilian or Matriarch. Those are some very specialized tools.
OTOH, a Gunting would be an excellent knife, both for SD and EDC, except that you may find it a bit too heavy and somehow difficult to carry. You may need a custom sheath for it. Not to mention that in order to properly use it you need to understand Bram Frank's philosophy - aka to have some MBC training.
But if you just want to pick between the Dodo and Karambit, I'd suggest the Dodo - it's more versatile and less slippery.

Thank you, everyone. I did purchase a Dodo. (blue) But I still love the aesthetics of the Karambit ( what IS a Karambit?) Wow, I really chose an expensive habit (which is not unlike me <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Thank you all for your advice, and god help me if I ever need to use one of these babies. I usually don't get hassled too much. I am 5'10 and well proportioned, so most stay out of my way. (one good thing about being a tall woman). But I wouldn't hesitate to use any of my Spydies if I absolutely had to. My life is worth more than theirs, anyday. Again, thank you all for such good advice. Much appreciated. Happy Saturday!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Kali

IMO, Kali, ya' made a <b>good </b>
choice - why?
The Karambit ( translated means <b>tiger
claw </b> <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ) was actually used ( as most knives in Malaysia & the Pacific ) as
a tool <b>first </b> , then as a weapon to repell invading outsiders ;
they're finding use in the U.S. today, but
the bottom line is you wouldn't want just a self defense knife on hand
but something that would embrace utility as
well - the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> karambit's a little too curved
for my taste, if I were going for one might
as well be Blade-Tech's ( not as pronouncedly curved as <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s, but by the same
token, more expensive ) Check out
that website I listed before for more on the karambit.
But if the boy's in blue were to do
a traffic stop & found a karambit ( and not
knowing it's history, just what they've read
on some of the so-called "forums" <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) they
might charge you with CDW. <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
i.e. - <b>Carrying a Dangerous Weapon </b> <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Better to have something that's "grey area".

Aloha Kali!
I agree with AET. If the boys in blue were knife educated or not, they'd most likely take that Kerambit away...or the both of you!
Now, finding the Dodo on your person, they might think what a weird knife and stop there. ( If they only KNEW!) Myself being involved in the world of LEO's, if I found the kerambit, probable confiscation and thorough questioning...I mean, just look at it! The Dodo has an acquired taste to it, but it doesn't scream out "combat" like the Kerambit. So this grey area it fits into, again I agree with Allen.
I recall training a cop one of my friends knew in some basic CQ knife "stuff". He had a Gerber EZ Out, and a SS, SE Police. After talking, he asked me what I carried. At the time, it was my SE Merlin. When I showed it to him, "HOLY $**T!!!" was his response. He told me just looking at the Merlin was enough for him to question me as to why i'm toting around a SE Hawksbill...I then showed him my Cricket in my fanny bag and asked, "What about this?" He laughed.
After our training session, he went and bought a Cricket.(The aluminum ones, the FRN's did not exist yet.) 7yrs. later, he has gotten an FRN Crick for "backup"...
Stay safe, and practice safely.
God will put you over...if you let Him! Mark 11:23!

Of the two, strictly for defense, and assuming both to be equally legal, the Karambit. A karambit is a control tool as well as a cutting tool. I could write a small book on why I would want neither to be the only knife I carried, and I do like both the Dodo and Karambit.

The only way to truly know for sure is to feel each one, clip it in your pocket, remove it, carry it for a few days. You'll know which one is really right. For the boys in blue..I do agree ..dodo..<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Kali-
Congrats on your Dodo purchase! It's not my choice for a defensive knife in the Spyderco line, but I'm sure it's a fine knife. My choice would be the Lil' Temp or Gunting. Both have MBC locks and blades that are not too long. The Lil' Temp is a little less conspicuous looking so I would choose it over the Gunting for that reason.

out of the 2, the Karambit.
the dodo is superb but WAY WAY WAY to small.
most thugs will laugh at you if you pull that out as apposed to pulling out a Chinook.
You want length, more length=more reach.
For defense I dont agree about the straight edge at all, a straight edge is for stabbing which is more for the aggressors side.
The curved claw egde is for slashing which is my preferance.
Where the like of the Gunting solve that problem is with the ramp of the blade which can be used to pinch nerves and pressure points as well as been used as fist loads.
I still stand by my suggestion to you as a woman, I would go for a Matriarch/Civilian.
2ndly if that cannot be obtained I would get something like a Gunting.
If thats a nono then Id choose the Karambit or the Chinook.
Be aware, you get something like the Gunting its not going to make you a Bram Frank just because you are carring a weapon he designed.
You will be no good without training, this as I have said is where the Civilian/Matriarch design does and always had benefited.
I have read posts about explaining why your attacker has 40 slashes across his body in a court of law.
In my mind when someone is trying to take my life I dont care about any judge or LEO, my life is the only thing of worth at that point in time.
I pray you make a wise desicion on this one, you looking for something to protect your life, not give your attacker something to cut your throat with.
Cheers
