Something wrong with my Delica?

#1

Post by Omega »

Hello,

Yesterday I was closing down my Delica, but did not press the blade release button properly. Suddenly the blade closed. I tried the second time without pressing the release button and the blade closed again with small pressure. To quantify the pressure, I tried to lift 1.5 litres water bottle with the tip of the blade. It closed again! I cannot see any obvious faults or damages on my knife and the knife opens as usual. Now I am wondering if my Delica is broken or it is the same with all Delicas. Do you experience similar easy closing problem?

NO, it's definitiely not normal, either for Spyderco or any other lockback... One thing to check though is something that happened to me the other day - my Delica hadn't been cleaned in a while and a bit of pocket lint dislodged and got jammed into the locking notch in the blade. A toothpick helped scrape out the crud and it's good as new. Worth looking at - otherwise give Spyderco a holler and see what they can do.

Welcome to the Forum!! Exactly what Zrexxer said. Also try and give it a HOT water and soap bath. Softens any crud and makes it easier to clean. Lube it up and give it a try...if that doesn't work call Spyderco. You will get THE best in service. Take Care and stick around and enjoy the Forum!!!

Aloha and welcome!

I had the same thing happen w/ my Police model, but it shut on my digits...

Did exactly that, the soap and water treatment worked and it never happened again.
Thank God, I'm just fortunate it was the PE model...

God will put you over...if you let Him! Mark 11:23!

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I never encountered lock failures with ANY of my spydies so far. (the truth is that I do take care of them, they're always clean and lubed).
Try cleaning the lock and blade with a toothpick first and then with a neutral detergent and warm water, maybe some pocket lint or dirt got stuck there. If still doesn't work, send it to Spyderco, they'll fix it in no time.

I have the same problem with the Mini Police necklace I wear. There is nothing in the lock. It acts like it has no lock. Maybe it's considered jewlery and is just for show. Does anyone know if it should be better?

Hi
Thank you all for reply. I will give a hot bath to my knife tonight. I tried to clean the lock using a toothpick, but, unfortunately, I cannot reach the point where the lock catches the blade. Could you tell me, if it possible to disassemble my knife without using special equipment?

I wouldn't try that. Just send it to warranty, if they can't fix it no one can. If it is a defect you'll have a new knife.

Hello again,
I tried to put it into a hot water. Well, the knife opens easier, but it became even lighter to close without pressing the button! Could you tell me Spyderco Company's email? I live in the UK, so I want to find their distributer here first and ask if they can send my knife to the USA or exchange it- it should be cheaper. I left them message on this website http://www.spyderco.com/contact_us.asp? ... KLL4Q6D9RC on Tuesday, but so far no reply.

Edgar Brother's (Spyderco's UK distributer) won't send your knife to Spyderco. You'll have to send it yourself.

Return it to the following address, include your name, address, number and a note explaining the reason for
the return.

Spyderco, Inc.
820 Spyderco Way
Golden, CO 80403

custsvc@spyderco.com

Edit: Recorded Delivery will only cover you up to £28, so go Special Delivery if you think you need to.

Sorry to dissapoint you Ken, but I do have two Mini Police necklaces (one for me, one for my wife) and both have strong locks (considering the size of the knife, of course). I lifted a bag with a big bottle of Cola (that's about 5 pounds, I guess) on the back of the knife without any noticeable stress. Didn't want to push further, though... <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hello, again, everybody,
I went about two weeks ago to the shop in my city that sells Spyderco knives and they sent the knife to the factory. I got replacement knife today. I had to pay £3 for Postage and Packaging. So, my problem is sorted. My old knife had the blade from ATS-55 steel and the replacement knife has VG-10 steel. New knife seems to be a bit more sharp from the box than the old one.
Two more questions: At what angle would you recommend me to sharpen the knife on Spyderco Tri-angle and should I wait until the blade gets dull and then sharpen or I had better keep it sharp all the time?

I'd suggest you wait until it needs sharpening but always keep a good edge on it. It can take ages to rejuvenate a really dull blade.

I preffer to sharpen my spydies regularily before getting dull. Therefore, a few touches at 40° on the whites are usually enough. However, after a while you'll need to backbevel the blade at 30º and then finish it at 40°. For this I'd reccomend the 4 steps procedure as described in the 204 manual (grays corners, grays flats, whites corners, whites flats).

Don't you find that after sharpening on tri-angle with 40 degree the knife is not as sharp as it was from the box?

Once you finish with the 40 degree bevel, strop the blade on a piece of brekfast cereal box cardboard. A few strokes will really refine and polish the edge. This is a good way to quickly touch up the edge freehand in between 'hits' with the ceramic sticks.
