I'm a big fan mid back-locks but I'm wondering if I wouldn't prefer compression lock on something that size. That said, throw a ~4.5" SE on something with good-to-great corrosion resistance and I'd be in regardless.sal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 6:59 pmWell, I received the first drawing for the Police with a 5.0" blade length. So I want to continue this conversation. I know drawings always look larger than a real model, but this thing is a sword. Overall length in almost 12". I guess I'm trying to decide; 1) if we want to make one, and 2) do we want to modify the design? It's currently a mid back-lock.

Re: Police XL Talk
I can recall Eric stating that he'd like backlocks particularly in large folders due to the strength of that locktype (actually in a vid where he was talking about the Police).KeepCalm&Carrion wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 3:26 pmI'm a big fan mid back-locks but I'm wondering if I wouldn't prefer compression lock on something that size. I personally think the backlock is at least as strong as the comp.lock... and works in the Catcherman (4.64 blade), right?
One option though would be to give a Police XL the Tatanka Powerlock...

Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):

Re: Police XL Talk
Based on pure reliability, I would prefer a good back lock on a 5" bladed folder. It can and has been done. I have a Cold Steel XL folder from years ago with a 6" blade that has a back lock (from years before CS was using the Tri-ad Lock) that is super strong. I don't know if I would trust a detent-based lock on a folder with a 5" blade.

Re: Police XL Talk
Your comment on the trustworthiness of detent-based locks is a good argument for not using a compression lock on the jumbo Police variant. I really do draw confidence from the strong closing bias of back locks.James Y wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 4:04 pmBased on pure reliability, I would prefer a good back lock on a 5" bladed folder. Serrated. Stainless. I’d use it for a travel food prep knife.

Re: Police XL Talk
A Police knife with a 5" blade sounds good, even better with a swedge. I like back locks, so that's fine with me. I would prefer G-10 on a knife this size - I think the balance would be better and not so blade-heavy.

I have one of those CS models, too. I agree with your comments.James Y wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 4:04 pmBased on pure reliability, I would prefer a good back lock on a 5" bladed folder. Re: Police XL Talk
I'd be in if:
-It is FRN with liners
-The choil is ditched
-The backlock is kept

VG-10 and / or Cruwear for the steel, otherwise I just wouldn't want to ever sharpen it at that size. Keep the choil, FRN w/liners, mid-backlock and I doubt I could resist, even though I never need a blade that big.
Maybe if viv promises to make us a video of himself squealing like a nine-year-old girl the first time he holds one we can get Sal & Eric to make this happen.

Re: Police XL Talk
With such a large blade maybe it would be possible to make it handle forward without making the proportions all wonky. But however it turns out I'm in for one in any steel other than VG10 (I know it's a decent steel but it just doesn't tickle my pickle
)

First thing I thought was Tatanka! I have been hunting a Tanaka for years its about time to bring it back from the dead.

Re: Police XL Talk
I don't think it would need a Power lock unless it was made much thicker and heavier. Both things I would object to. Almost as much as I'd object to a compression lock, which would be a total deal breaker for me.

Keep it slim in the handle, thin blade stock and mid lock back. Black G10 with full exposed and milled liners and k390 a la the original P4.
Re: Police XL Talk
So, for the purpose of discussion; Any interest in a handle forward and no finger-choil in the design?

Re: Police XL Talk
I really don't think a knife that big needs a finger choil. More cutting edge is better for me.
