Am I crazy or are the edges on the handle/tang of this VG XEOS mule a bit more rounded than those of past versions? It feels different and a little more comfortable in the hand. I suppose it won't matter once I get the scales on it, and I also suppose I could compare the handle/tang of the new mule to the older versions I have, but those are stowed safely away in a high-security plastic storage container inside my high-security closet, and it takes a bit of effort to get to them.

This is my first mule, so I have nothing to compare it against. But the edges felt comfortable to me.

I bought two to avoid the shipping cost also. Then again, my wife claims I'm not the smartest, and I won't argue that point. :winking-tongue

It is a Seki model rather than Golden or Taichung. They seem to take a bit more time to round off edges that don't need to be sharp.

2 ordered for me. Wanted something stainless to play around with in the kitchen, the ones I already have (2x K294 and 2x T15) worry me for kitchen work. I only ordered 2 to get the free shipping as well lol.

Oh yeah, I almost always avoid the $13 shipping charge by spending $75+ on another knife. It's not really the most sound financial strategy, but it's a fantastic way to justify purchasing another knife. I'm not spending more money on another knife, I'm saving money by not paying for shipping!
Exactly. I'm up for spending the money and it's nice to have a spare. A complete knife like this a> wouldn't likely be made (this is one of the greatest Spyderco strengths, willingness to try new stuff and to let us do the same) and b> would probably cost 2-300 bucks for a cutting edge steel. I picked up a handle/sheath combo off of ebay for not too much, and I am in the kitchen all the time so it's perfect.

Yeah, I finally called the SFO and the manager okayed selling me a couple over the phone since I couldn't get the website to work. They said it was due to high traffic, but I continued trying for a week and never got it past that same place.

Since I was about to retire and wouldn't have my work address to ship to, I changed my shipping address to "Same as billing address" and it immediately went through to the next step. Go figure.

I do agree, the edges are certainly more rounded than my 2 K294, 2 T15 and the several SPY27 Mule2's I've put handles on.

The overall attention to details on this mule is far better than previous ones . I’m really enjoying this mule. I’ve been carrying mine all weekend and I’ve got to say it seems to be a lot more stainless than the VG 10 Rockjumper I have. I threw some scales on it and carried the mule scout style. I did not oil it. I spent all day in the yard Friday and Sunday working and my shirt was soaked with sweat. Saturday I wore it to Fort Worden Historical State Park near the Strait of Juan de Fuca for a family hike through the old battery fortifications. The Rockjumper had some signs of patina but the mule had none at all Sunday night. I’m curious to see what will happen as I wear it throughout the week. Looks promising so far but I’ve only used it for some yard work and whittling while at the park.

I decided to get the MT41 for meal prep when out camping and hiking. I have been using it at home and leaving it with stuck-on acidic foods and it was fine, as expected. I did notice two nicks on the blade, one might have been from an accidental run-in with a pan edge, the other I'm not sure. I don't have anything else to compare it to other than my kitchen knife (Dexter with "DEXSTEEL") but it doesn't seem to have very high toughness. I have only been cutting vegetables.

Back to a month to get anything from he USA to Australia :worried

But got my two today and definitely a contour on the handle compared to previous Mules. Seki awesome I must say.
These look good.

Putting some handles on some of my knives this week so one of these might jump the queue if I leave one out. :winking-tongue

Do you happen to know how the toughness compares to a blade made from standard VG-10? I think VG-10 had decent toughness in its day, but has since been surpassed by new compositions, and is sort of low-middling toughness these days.

The Seki City mules have a distinctly hand made feel. On one of my MT41s you can distinctly see the wire wheel used around the trademark hole, perpendicular to the grind plane grain. At the thumb ramp – and all about the handle and spine – the edge is noticeably rounded. The best one is this: sight the knife down the spine: 2 of four Japanese mules I own are actually not straight.
The Taichung mules look 100% CNCed. No broken edges, nothing distinctive. The American mule I own is definitely machined and then tumbled, so the edges are softened but evenly; only a trace remains of the stamping striations. The Italian is closer to the Taiwanese. And the Swiss looks like it wasn’t machined or manufactured at all, it looks alien. Oh, one last thing, the Taiwanese is the longest, but the Japanese is a close second.

Takefu says it should be more corrosive resistant than VG-10. I found it takes a very nice edge. Ho is it cutting for you?
