Customer service is the key factor here. As long as a company has good customer service it doesn't matter. I have had good luck with amazon's customer service.

They are a large company and with the volume and diversity of products they sell things are going to slip through the cracks. I doubt it is deliberate. Not pulling the product from the site yet must be another oversight.

One more point. Amazon is the walmart of online shopping. What are we expecting? Pay a couple more dollars and buy from a trusted and respected dealer and this won't happen. Bargain shop for the lowest price on a product that is being counterfeited and it might.

I think the issue here is more the anger and frustration that Spyderco is being wronged by these counter fitters and we are supporters and fans of spyderco.
My OP had nothing to do with Amazon's return policy or how I should handle this. This was a heads up to the Spyderco community and Spyderco. Amazon has already issued a refund and I have 30 days to send it back. Spyderco has asked me to wait before I do so they can review the situation.
My comment wasn't directed at anyone in particular. Just a general statement about the tone of this thread and my perspective on the situation. We all thank you for bringing this to the attention of both us and the Spydie crew. :)

It would be comforting if the FBI takes this type of IP infringement as seriously as they supposedly take video piracy. If that's the case, Amazon could file a complaint against whoever supplied them with the fakes. Stopping the companies in China that make this stuff from doing so may be impossible, but stopping the large scale sale of it here should not be.

Just curious - did anyone buy shares of Alibaba during their recent (and HUGE) IPO?

The joke is that the shares traded on the U.S. market are not even shares in the "Alibaba" companies themselves. They are shares in a holding company (Alibaba Group Holding Ltd) based in the Caribbean that has ties to Alibaba's founder, Jack Ma. They structured the IPO this way to avoid a whole host of legal issues inside of China.

It looks like Alibaba's questionable business ethics extend beyond simple IP theft.

I expect that the next outlet will be E-bay if Amazon shuts down the fakes. It's disturbing and angering to see counterfitters permeate such a niche market, especially one that involves one of our beloved hobbies.

I wonder if Amazon would try and contact those who left negative reviews about the fakes, to try and remedy the situation? Would they even be set up to do this? It would be nice to see if it happened, but I would guess that it will be incumbent upon the customer to reach out to Amazon instead.
The thing that sucks, especially for Spyderco is that even though there are only a few noticing that they got fakes...Think of all the other people that get a counterfeit by accident and think that is how Spyderco makes their knives. It just taints the whole brand.

Anyhow, the knife is on its way to Spyderco at their request along with all my Amazon paperwork etc.

It is service like this that makes me a Spydie fan for life.

Very true and very sad. :( Hopefully there will be an eventual solution to the whole fake Spydie issue...

There could be a unique generated serial number made up of numbers, letters and symbols etched under the steel type on the blade. Spyderco could have a database that when the serial number is looked up, it tells the knife model, steel, scale color and material and date of mfg. This could also be added as one of those 3D stickers on the end of the box that also seals the box closed.

I was going to mention something along these lines in here and also in the counterfeit discussion section of the forum. I would like to brainstorm with you all here and come up with some mechanism, device, or physic, perhaps an embedded holographic chip or something that would not interfer with overall knife performance, that Spyderco could embed within the blade or handle structure, that would assure positive identification as being a genuine Spyderco product.

The problem I can see would be, if the counterfeiters are able to counterfeit the anti-counterfeiting device/material, as well as the knife itself.

If the serial was so unique that there was zero consistency between models....the Chinese could copy one knife.....but if the original purchaser could register the number....any others would show as not valid.
