Got a counterfeit Dragonfly Salt 2 for my birthday.

#1

Post by Screwdriver »

So the wife bought me a Dragonfly Salt 2 for my birthday from Amazon that stated "Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com."

Here is the link at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00507 ... UTF8&psc=1

I get it this afternoon and all the warning signs went off. Whole blade grind is wrong, the blade is so loose that just holding it upside down, causes it to come out of the handle. I can also defeat the lock with very little pressure, in fact my Pingo is harder to close. The FRN has a weird color compared to another yellow Salt I have. It also had metal shaving that fell out when I opened it. The lettering is off and close to the edge.

So I did a search for counterfeit ones and found this link.....Mine is exactly like this one.

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shi ... 38649.html

These are the pics of the one I received.

Now I am extremely bummed, as I have never had an issue with Amazon as long as it stated "Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com." Even Sal said in a thread I cannot locate that one should be safe as long as the listing stated "Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com."

Also, if you look at the comments for the Amazon link I posted above.....looks like a bunch are hitting customers this last month or so.

Oh well.....

That stinks. I am sorry to hear that, man. Yep, just send her back and they should make it right for you. Regardless, happy birthday!

Screwdriver,
I'm sorry to hear of this. Before you send it back, please send me an e-mail at khunter @ spyderco.com (remove the spaces of course) and include the links as well as your images. I'd like a chance to review this before you return it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first confirmed FRN counterfeit? For the longest time it has been said that FRN knives are too expensive to replicate because of the mold?

Hi screwdriver!

Your pics are conclusive: that thing screams Fake! from a mile away.

Return it to Amazon, like pronto, and claim them to send you an Original-Doubt-Free Spyderco as they advertise they are selling.

Checking on the reviews from Amazon page I found at least 3 fake reports. What a mess...

Really a bummer. I'm looking at my VG-10 and the SB d'fly's I have. It looks like the FRN handle is a Spyderco. However the other parts don't match. Does the Salt D'fly have screws on both sides of the handle? I don't have the salt buy my two have the pin head on the front side and screw heads on the other side. In your picture there is no swedge along the spine. Both of mine (VG-10 and SB) have a swedge from the thumb jimping along about 70% of the spine.

Looking at the handle my two handles (grey FRN and black FRN) they look identical down to the reversed pattern, and everything else.

I think (COULD BE WRONG) someone got some actual Spyderco FRN handles and made some other parts (blade, lockbar, etc.) and put them together. The first thing that looks wrong is screws on both sides of the handle. One side should have smooth pin heads. The link below is Spyderco's Dragonfly 2 salt. Notice the smooth pins on one side of the handle.

Wow, this is really disappointing. So now Amazon isn't even reliable?! I have been using them a lot. But now...

The fake has torx like heads on both sides......my other DFly has pin heads on one and torx on the other.

Oh...I also want to point out that this is the first Spyderco I got from Amazon that has the "Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com." (Which are the only ones I will buy) that did not have clear stickers on the ends of the box keeping it closed.

Not the first at all. If I remember correctly it was the first FRN copy to the over the counterfeit market that I saw about 1 year ago, but we now have the native to look out for too, the endura both in VG-10, ZDP and with emerson and finally the atlantic salt. Check my thread if you want to see some pictures for yourself:

Sorry to hear about that mate. I usually deem shipped and sold by amazon to be the gold standard for buying on there as well. =/ is nothing sacred anymore!
Laethageal that thread is a bit scary to look at =x

This is what makes me think someone got original FRN Spyderco handles. The rest of the knife is fake. So??? How does someone aquire original Spyderco FRN handles? The handles look like they were made by Spyderco. After they come out of the mold where do they go? I'm sure Spyderco would check this out. OTOH, I may be WAY wrong.

It's possible the seller is legit but someone returned the fake in place of the real deal and they resold the fake without knowing it.

Do they really need mold now aday with those 3d printers that can make crazy detailled figuring with up to 600 micron accuracy on hard material and even lower on soft plastic. There must be even better out now and many other methods to copy the FRN handle. I remember my brother telling me a few years back that each figuring for the gameboard their company was developing had a cost of about .02$ each shipped and were highly detailed.
real figuring about 1.5inch high, see the details. I don't see no trouble for them being able to copy a FRN handle.

Sal stated in another thread that "Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com." are safe. This was not a 3rd party selling through Amazon. But there are others reviews on my link where people just got a fake like myself.

I bought the SAME EXACT knife from a Amazon, and mine is shady too. It also arrived super loose, and once I tightened it up, now the blade doesn't close all the way. I am still pretty upset by the whole ordeal.

Hi Screwdriver,

Thanx for the input. We thought Amazon was more careful. Maybe not? We'll look into it.

That is disappointing. I have bought other Spyderco's from Amazon occasionally and had no problems, but it sounds like they slipped up.

I had thought about purchasing a Lion Spy from Amazon, lowest price I've seen it for, at $226.99, but I think I'll pass.

I've purchased tons of Spydies from Amazon and they've all been legit. Sorry to see this happen...luckily, their CS is pretty good.

man, my condolences, as well. Happy Birthday to you anyhow, I hope it gets resolved for you.

Let me ask this, obviously, the counterfeit would not be real H1 steel, correct? So a fake H1 steel that is not real H1 would soon rust whereas real H1 would not.
