Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
That's not the MSRP, $400 is the street price, drops tomorrow 4/28 at 10am central.
So it goes.
Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
The SpydieChef is $234 and it has LC200N and Titanium scales. What makes the Bowie worth $166 (40%) more?

Contouring, Anodizing, Exclusivity & Hype would be my best guesses.
So it goes.
Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
Good question... Typically the street price of Spyderco knives is about 30% less than the MSRP. The original Slysz Bowie seems like it was price a little weird. The MSRP was $500, but it sold for like $280 if I remember correctly. That's almost 45% off of the MSRP.
If the Slysz Bowie follows the pretty standard 30% off Spyderco MSRP pricing, it would have an MSRP of about $575, since the street price is $400. If it uses the same ~45% markdown as the original Slysz (doubtful), then it would have an MSRP of around $725.
Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
I'm not complaining about the finish and steel. I'm just glad that as one of the people loudly advocating for the knife's return, we finally have something almost near to the original Bowie. My complaint is against the dealer itself, Knifejoy. They are many years into this business, yet they still will not allow international customers to buy their fast-selling exclusives, but at the same time, they will allow us to buy the slow-selling ones and some non-exclusive knives thru PayPal. That's just plain discrimination, period. I know because personally I was able to secure their Para 3 LW exclusive via an issued PayPal invoice, yet at the next exclusive, they flat out refused my request for a PayPal invoice. It wouldn't be a complaint at all if other dealers were the same but it seems that they are the ones only practicing this.
If they aren't or just refuse to deal with international customers unlike the other Spyderco dealers, they shouldn't be producing exclusives in the first place. Moreso with this one where there is an international demand for this knife. If CutleryShoppe and REC which are small dealers will allow us internationals to deal with them, despite COVID and all, what prevents KJ from doing so? Their excuse in their IG page is just seriously lame. All other dealers are dealing with the same issues yet it does not prevent them from catering to those not in the US.

I'd like to know if the $400 retail price is 30% off MSRP. Knifejoy doesn't show the MSRP. If I remember correctly, Spyderco sets the MSRP and the dealer can sell for up to 30% off.fixall wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:03 pm

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
MSRP and street price used to be more widely divergent. I can't remember if it was at the exact same time or not, but along with the shift to MAP they began to try to bring MSRP and MAP (effectively the new street price, as long as supply is sufficient) a little closer together until they got to the 30% offset we see now.fixall wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:03 pm

I believe the logic was that the MSRP was getting a little too ridiculously high above street pricing - 45% off MSRP meant it was almost double what things actually sold for.
I'm too lazy to dig them up now but the Spyderco team laid this out in some posts a while back, and tried to make sure that the MSRP/MAP shifts didn't raise prices in one big jump by slowly working them into the annual price changes over several years. I can't pretend I'm thrilled about price increases but I respect how up-front Spyderco was about the whole thing.
As it relates to the Bowie, I wouldn't read too much into the old MSRP/street offset. 30% is the current standard as far as I'm aware. But of course the dealer can charge whatever they want (outside of the MAP floor - does that even apply to single-dealer exclusives when there's no competitor to undercut?) and some don't follow the 30%.
I'm pretty sure I've paid non-discounted MSRP on blue-handled, m390-bladed dealer exclusives before. :o (and to me, they were all worth it :) )

According to the product page, 500 USD, so 25% off.

Yet, that might be related to the OG version if the product page was not kept up to date.

For reference, the Swayback has a contoured Ti handle with a mirror-wash blade. No crowned spine but it does have a more intricate grind. Also a SS lock bar insert. MSRP on that is $390 with a MAP price of $273
Not complaining about the price of the SB. It is what it is. Just thought I'd provide the price of the Swayback for comparison

FWIW, there are a number of shipping proxy businesses that will send stuff to anywhere in the EU, my brother in law lives in Italy and he uses them fairly regularly with eBay and KC. My understanding from him (last I checked) is that he loves it.

So if the Knifejoy Slysz Bowie had been a regular production run Spyderco, it would likely have an MSRP of $570 based on the street price. Seeing as it's a dealer exclusive though, who knows (well, Knifejoy and Spyderco I suppose, lol). Like Skywalker said, KJ can set basically whatever price they want. With the MSRP of the last Bowie, and the price increases, I can't imagine KJ could be making more than 30% - 40% though.

Exactly, we do have shipping forwarders that use local US addresses for shops that offer no international shipping and they ship to our country too, the problem is that KJ will not even allow us internationals to use our CCs. It has to be a US card, even though Visa and Mastercard and Amex has been around for decades and has been used to buy anything anywhere as long as the seller supports these cards. Other knife dealers do not have this restriction.

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!
For those who are frustrated that this isn't finished like the old one, and/or it won't ship to Europe, may I offer an alternative way to view the situation? Perhaps look at this as a ray of hope. The door that was bolted shut has now been opened. Knife Joy saw the chatter here and on other social media, and no doubt saw the secondary market prices. St. Nicks has all but said that they've already negotiated their own exclusive run of the Slysz Bowie. I have no doubt that other retailers will be watching to see how fast this Knife Joy exclusive sells at $400 apiece. If it sells quickly, that will further open the door to other dealers commissioning their own exclusives. Hopefully dealers that ship internationally and offer a variant more to your liking. I have no doubt that Spyderco will also be watching to inform their decision making on putting their own run (or runs) of the original back into production as well.

I wouldn't pull the discrimination card so easily. It's probably a business decision. What the rationale is, isn't obvious, but I can't believe they wouldn't want all the European and Asian money they could get their hands on if there was no downside to it.nerdlock wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:13 pmI'm not complaining about the finish and steel. It's great that places like Knife center, Cutlery shoppe, TRM and other will ship outside the US, but I would look at it from the perspective of them going the extra mile, rather than KnifeJoy discriminating. There are hurdles, may they be big or small, but they are there.

The main problem is that they wont even accept international credit cards. In addition, they might not even ship to any shipping proxy addresses.
