Is this from personal experience? Or are you just saying that because of what the online customer service statement says?
Because I have heard of several instances (including one of mine), where Spyderco did not charge for repairs that seemed to fall well within the "payment" criteria.

In my instance, I expected to pay the fee, and was ready to, but was surprised when my knife was returned with my uncashed checks. This does not mean that I will expect Spyderco to complete any future repairs I might need for free, as they are, above all, a business, and need to make money. I will always expect, and be prepared to pay, for any repairs; if Sal and the Gang choose to extend a courtesy towards me, it just cements my loyalty to Spyderco, but I am not under any illusions of supposed privilege.
--------------------------------------------------------

Sorry for the continued post, I felt the need to add something in relation to the topic.

This brings something important to my mind. In many ways, I feel as much of an unreasoning dislike toward Benchmade as that dealer did towards Spyderco, and this thread has reminded me of the foolishness of that.

Quite often, I feel an almost blind loyalty towards Spyderco, to the point of actively disliking other brands for perceived inferiority.

If there's one thing that I've learned from the Spyderco knives that I've bought, it is that:

a. You can't judge something until you've had experience with it yourself.
b. You can't always judge a brand by a single experience.

To this end, I have resolved to try very hard to not automatically tune out whenever someone mentions Benchmade (I'm thinking specifically of one friend I have who's quite into BM). I may not like the fact that they use the round hole, but seeing as all Sal has said is that they "have an agreement", I don't know the whole story, and I shouldn't make assumptions.

Reading this thread has reminded me of the fact that no matter how much we like a company, we shouldn't let our like of one company turn into dislike of another company strictly because of any preconceived notions.
Back from an extended hiatus.

I need to further explain that when I said that "number 2) is probably fully true", I mean that I believe he does tell his customers that. I"m not saying that I am buying what he is selling. And I should have emphasized "some" fubar screw repairs. (based on web site info.)

I'm not here to throw poop around (I know kids visit this forum to) :D . I'm here to just tell you what I heard and in some ways wanted to vent. It really would be bad taste to say what the name was of the store or who I spoke to or say bad things about Benchmade. (shiny footprints)

I own 9-10 Spydercos that by itself shows how much I respect this company and it's products.

But really, I wonder what the true motivation behind his attitude is? I have only been into :spyder: co for about five months, and before I bought one I did plenty of internet research. I think if people are willing to go look for unbiased opinions they will see the sterling reputation that Spyderco has worked so hard for, and deserves.
I don't know about you guys but any salesman type that has to deride a competitor is not the guy I would buy from, cars, boats, knives doesn't matter.

It is funny....

Some of these dealers, and knife shop owners are just not knife nuts....

They are business men. And as such, sometimes they start to develop opinions that are amplifications of what their customers are saying....

There exists a knife shop near where I live. And he has a great selection of Benchmade, but a less than optimal selection of Spyderco, and among the Spyderco's, he very rarely has any of the higher end stuff.....

Now, he knows that myself and my two brothers are Spyderco fiends, but he cannot seem to wrap his head around the concept that if he stocked some high end Spydercos, he would get some of our hard earned money.... You see, most people that come in, want a collector type knife, and he sells that.... Not saying bad about Benchmade, because they have really cool stuff.... But, they tend to sell to the collector market, not the user market....

I work for a company that sells cutlery as well as sporting goods, and I work in the portion of the store that sells the cutlery.... And I cannot tell you how many times I have suggested a Spyderco for all the right reasons.... Function, Quality, Value.... And the customer literally turns their nose up.....

Why do they do this? Well, I usually respond that Spydercos are built for function not for looks..... And they almost always agree..... You see, many customers cannot look past the appearance, to see the function....

We all see it, in all sorts of areas.... My favorite is automobiles.... How many guys do you see just showering their ride with money, to make it look good..... All Show, No Go..... Like a H3.... My good buddy drives a really well built Jeep, and he was talking to a lady about her H3, and she was enthusing about it's off road performance..... As my buddy walked away, he looked back at the nerf bars just 8 inches off the ground.... The H3 would high center on a soccer ball..... But, boy, it looked good......

I was getting one of my Troopers appraised, because I had been hit.... And the lady was looking over this, and that.... And pointing out all the deficiencies in it's appearance.... I pointed out..... It has a heater, a windshield, and 4 wheel drive, the perfect North Idaho vehicle! All Go!

I've run into a few retailers like this, not all knife retailers. They basically bad mouth a product and generally, regardless of what I actually want, I leave the store without making a purchase. It is completely unprofessional.

End of rant
