What does the "H" in H-1 Stand for?

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

I read that it means "Hitachi" as in the Japanese corporation, is that true?

Also, is it an iron-clad rule that they will not sell barstock, rods, plates, etc of 'raw' H1 steel to overseas knife makers and individuals interested in making things from it, that all finished knives and other items must be made there, in Japan, or, are there known exceptions?

I'm not sure about the first part, but can offer an answer for the second part.

As a general rule, Japanese knife makers work with Japanese steels. But the steel manufacturers have allowed foreign knife makers to use their steel in knives made outside Japan. Case and point, the Spyderco Autonomy. Made in Golden, CO with H1 steel. Boker also makes a couple VG-10 knives outside Japan as does SOG.

H stands for Hattori Hanzo, famed Japanese sword maker.

H stands for: "Have you ever seen this steel rust? Because I haven't..."

You're right. I heard "Hitachi" many years ago and it seemed right since Spyderco used other Hitachi steels. I never heard anything contrary until your post. Sorry for spreading misinformation.

I recall doing that too. In fact, there's always a chance I'm to blame for your mistake. ;) :p

Yeah, but Hattori Hanzo stopped making swords just like Krein stopped doing regrinds. :p

I am not sure if this was cleared up but you were correct. Well actually both of you were.

Made by Myodo but the H stands for Hitachi.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.
