New knives needing adjustments.

#1

Post by DJD »

Has anyone experienced a new Spyderco feeling a little to loose when you check how solid it feels when locked open? My ambitious and delica 4 was this way and I tightened the torx screw to get it more solid. Not griping about Spyderco at all, I love their knives and have a full fledged addiction to their blades. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this.
thank you.

Yes. With production knives, they normally aren't 100% perfect. You may have to trade blade centering for blade play or vice versa. Honestly though on most Spydercos I've had, I've been able to adjust them to near perfection.

Welcome to the forum, totally normal. If you can tighten the pivot and remove the play, you should be good to go.

I find periodic adjustment necessary with most knives with screw construction so a little tweaking out of the box does not bother me at all.

Also keep in mind people's preferences differ. What's loose yto one person is just right to another. The good news is screw construction gives us the ability to adjust them to our liking.

Being new to the knives I figured I would ask. I'm okay with it that's for sure since a small adjustment isn't a huge deal and most def not a deal breaker for these awesome blades. Thanks for the replies, this is an awesome place to get questions answered and to gain some insight with Spyderco products.

Exactly, it's a Goldilocks situation if there ever was one. A knife that one person will feel is "too loose" will be considered "too tight to flick easily" by another, and "just right" by a third. It's impossible to please everyone, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with tuning one to suit your own preferences.

It's not so much that they need adjustment, as it's that they can be adjusted (tuned) to suit everyone's personal preference... (as Deacon said)

I would go so far as to say if some knives came pinned instead of screwed, they would definitely have some blade play issues to be concerned with, but then again I think most pinned models come slightly over tight to allow for break in so you still don't see those issues very much.
