Finally putting a handle on the bushcraft

#1

Post by Niles »

I finally got around to starting to get a handle put on my bushcraft.

Here's a couple progress shots:

Not the most ergonomic handle. I'll tweak it a little though ;)

Which wood did you go with there?

Not sure. It was in the scrap bin at woodcraft. No one knew what it was. I'm anxious to see how it cleans up.

I hope those scales come out nice for you. What are you planning to use for a sheath?

I'll make something from leather. Probably just a deep clam shell; it fits the bushcraft theme and is dead simple (and I don't really enjoy leather work so simple is good ;) ).

cool Niles, I hope you'll keep us up to date on your project when you can. I'm curious to see the different stages of progress and the final result.

Not a lot of time to work today but managed to get the sides flushed up. Next up is to create the profile. I like the looks of a thinner handle, but I like a thick handle for a worker...so I'll leave this one on the thicker side. After that, I'll pop the handle off and finish the top.

Couldn't sleep, so I got a bit more done.

Profiling:

Image

I've been wanting to see what an asymmetrical handle would feel like (thicker on the palmar side than the finger side), so that's what I'm going for here. But, I may have gone too far. We'll see.

Here's the rough profile:

Image

It looks pretty dodgy in the picture, but I measured the parts that count and they are where I intended them (for better or worse).

Here's the profile smoothed out a bit:

Image

It actually feels pretty good in the hand in various grips. I may have taken the spine down a bit too far, and created a potential for hot spots where it's too thin to be more rounded out. But only time will tell.

Tomorrow I'll tackle the top.

That wood looks sort of like Sycomore, but it is hard to tell. From Woodcraft, it could be almost anything...

Looking good, Niles! Thanks for posting your WIP!

Took the handles off and finished the top:

One nice thing about using simple dowels to pin the scales to the blade is that it's easy to pop on and off. I'm planning on leaving these pins in place since I'm not sure about the ergos. Otherwise this would be the time to start gluing.

Here are a few shots after a couple costs of oil.

It actually feels really nice in the hand. I'm not sure how long the dowels will hold things together, but if I like it, I might make them permanent. Next up is to finish up sharpening and make the sheath.
