My wife gave me a Southard for my birthday and it has quickly become one of my favorite knives. The only things that I wanted to improve were the G-10 scale and the clip. The factory scale is a bit thick IMO and I prefer a deep carry clip. So, with a little research, I ran across Gatorscales. He makes Carbon Fiber scales for the Southard for a very reasonable price of $60. This price includes the overtravel stop as well. The scale is a bit thinner than the stock G10 and is in a matte finish (he also does a polished finish). It took about a week and a half from placing the order to have the scale in my hand. It is perfect in every way. Fit and finish is spot on and was exactly what I was looking for. Here are a few pics:
I ordered an STR Lowrider Titanium clip tonight, so will hopefully have it in a week or so. Let me know what you think.
You will notice that I did not install the lanyard tube. Since the scale is thinner, the stock lanyard tube is too long. Since I do not use lanyards, I chose to leave the tube out. If you want a shortened tube, Gatorscales sells them.
I can see that now...I wasn't thinking that the countersink for the screws is the same depth/thickness as stock, and the scale is just thinner beyond that. How close to equal would you say the sides are now? Kinda hard to tell from the pics.
