Fake Southard?

#1

Post by asmith001 »

It was suggested to me on another forum that I should investigate the authenticity of this Southard. It seems to match up fine with every picture that I've ever looked at, but when someone questioned it, the curiosity gets fired up. Does anyone have any opinions?

Thanks,
Aaron

It looks pretty regular in this two pictures to me but that doesn't mean that much I don't think.

How does it feel to you in hand etc?

If it's a fake, I'd be very surprised. The knife has a great feel to it. It's very solid, has very good lockup at about 40%. It seems like quality Spyderco fit and finish. The only flaw this one seems to have is centering. The blade favors the G10 side.

And what was the reason it was suggested it may not be authentic on another forum? And was it from those pictures??

Aaron,
I looked at both of mine and tried to position them in the same position as your pictures with similar lighting on a black surface. I see nothing indicating that yours is a counterfeit. I tried to duplicate the pictures but they didn't turn out good enough for a picture to picture comparison. I purchased one of mine from a local store and the other from a very reputable online store. So unless both of us got dooped, I would say that yours is legit.
I'm curious why someone indicated that yours may be fake and if so how they came to that conclusion from those pictures. Did you purchase it second hand? Did it come with the box and paperwork?
Either way, I think you are the owner of a quality Spyderco Southard. Enjoy it.

I understand that it was a flimsy comment without much backing, but having never held another one, I just wanted to make sure. This is what was said...
"I don't want to be ''that'' guy but that southard doesn't look quite right. Can't say for sure cause I don't own one but I would investigate."
Maybe it was the lighting that prompted the comment, but his was the picture I posted...

Based on that picture and the fact that the poster doesn't own one, I'd say he's talking out of his nether-region.

Where did you buy it? Having an email receipt from a notable shop is IMO as good as a letter from Sal himself.

I bought it from a bladeforums member with very good feedback. Seems like a standup guy.

It's more than likely real. Most scammers don't sell like-new in box knives on forums, it just doesn't seem like a scalable model of dishonesty. You could always mail it into Spyderco for a quick look-over though.

And, btw... It came with the box, papers, etc. Thanks for your input, everyone.
