My copy cat Mini Southard

Post by gull wing »

Ok, this is shameless, but I liked veloweave's Southard so much, I did one myself. It's certainly not as striking as his.
I bought this knife because of the CTS-204P and I love the steel. It cuts aggressively like VG10, easy to sharpen, and holds that edge a bit longer. The long blade and thick/long handle is too much of a load for this skinny frame.

* I'm an amateur, I didn't make this to sell, or am I taking orders, just for your viewing pleasure.

I must say this is a fit.

Scale - New G10 milled down to .080".
Frame - Ground (contoured), to give the overall feel of a thinner handle. Then blasted, stonewashed.
Blade - I like the smooth "satin" stonewash from factory. Flattened spine, satin finish.
Clip - Blast and stonewash.

I didn't think I could like the Southard more, but I think I may. Nicely done!

One guy on here sanded down the brown scales and I think that would look killer on yours. I can't find it, but I think he had re-ground the blade first and then sanded the scales.

Hi Folks!

It's a fact: the more I see the Mini Southards, the more I realize the original was merely a platform to be improved!

Great looking mod there GW, that's certainly professional looking!

Hate to say it but something like this would have been much preferred over the Dice, or at least for Spyderco to offer something like this in addition, staying in the same mind set...

Very nice work. I think I would have rounded the G10 scale to match the great work on the Ti on the lock side.

Thank you very much for the kind words, this is why we do this after all.

Some committed about the scale. I'm working on a sanded/contoured/polished scale now. I don't like the finish, it just doesn't pop, think I will blast it to see if it livens up.

That is a great job gull wing. You should make yourself a few different scales for it. An exotic wood scale would be nice, or even a titanium scale and then flame anodize it. Marbled carbon fiber also would be sharp. I love using my Mini Southard, I carry it now more than I do my Sebenza.
Most Carried: Sebenza Insingo small, Chaparral, Modded Southard Flipper, Delica 4, Ritter Mini-Grip, Techno, Injection 3.0
Wishlist 2014: Sage 2, Mnandi, Krein Alpha,
Other's I own or have sold: Vallotton, Anso Zulu, Blur CF, Scallion, Leaf Storm, Sage 2, Caly 3 CF
Flashlight EDC: Preon 0, Peak Eiger AAA Oveready edition with QTC & momentary button Nichia 219 emitter, Beta-QR, Muyshondt Aeon

Agreed... I like these mini's better than the original. Sal should take note of all the comments to these mini's.
