Paramilitary 2.... Up to the hype?

#1

Post by Sebastian »

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think of the paramilitary 2 as an edc? I just ordered one in satin and camo and hope to have it on Thursday. This will be my fourth spyderco.

I think it's the best knife available from any company at its price point...very well designed and useful knife.

I finally got to handle one today at shop about an hour from here; they had 3 all black ones in stock, I must confess I was very impressed, I think all the "hype" is probably justifiable. I'm now in need of one. :D

Yes. It takes up a little bit of pocket with its (relatively) large handle, but every time you use it you're glad every bit of that handle is there.

This is the wrong forum to ask that question, we probably all like it.

I was a fan of another company before I started buying modern Spyderco models, I still have knives from other brands in my EDC rotation, and my all time favorite may well be a knife from another brand. (I do have more Spyderco knives in my EDC rotation than any other brand though.) But as an EDC user knife the PM2 is very good, one of the best. It is light, relatively thin, comfortable, easy to use, a good size for me, and made of very good materials.

Short answer is absolutely. Although super blue stretch is getting a lot of pocket time too these days.

I love my Para 2's (especially the M390), but my Manix's still get more pocket time (especially the s110v).

Hype is met with specific expectations, preferences, and a bit of peer pressure. I would guess there is a good chance.

I have the satin and black pm2. Yes, it lives up to the hype. It's really not hype. There is something magic about the blade geometry, it slices better than a 4mm thick blade has a right to. The compression lock takes a little getting used to, but it's smooth, fast, and rock solid. If situation and legality allow me to carry a knife, that one is in my back pocket, even if something else is in my front pocket.

Hope you enjoy your pm2 as much as I have mine!

Depends on what hype you are hearing. ;)

Yes, its a pretty good all around knife for EDC.

The PM2 has a 3.5mm wide blade, not 4mm (Schempp Tuff is 4mm, and the Techno is 4.5mm). The blade geometry on the PM2 is superb though, and it definitely slices like a much thinner blade.

I stand corrected, sir! The catalog says 3.7 mm, but I laid my trusty ruler across the back of my pm2, and the taper ground (sharp) portion of the blade is indeed ~3.5 mm wide at most. The tang is ~ 3.7-3.8 mm, near as I can tell. Don't know where I got the 4 mm figure.

And it is a mad slicer! Pierces well with that pointy tip, too.

The para 1 or just plain para was from 4mm blade stock. I guess you got that from there.

Well for the most part yes but I guess I'll be the one to nitpick. If you have large hands the handle really only feels comfortable when choking up on the choil, otherwise your pinky lands on the heel hump. Then of course the lock isn't ambidextrous, some lefties have no problem with it, some do. For those reasons I prefer the Manix 2 just slightly more. It fits my hand better and the lock works the same with both hands.

Owning a PM2 is a lot like a marriage. You might stray once in a while but you'll always come home at the end of the day lol

You made a great choice, enjoy it :)
